Default Babe Ruth Sporting News RC PSA 4.5 goes for $75k

Is anyone surprised by this? Will this be a trend or a mirage? Is this a sign of things to come or just one auction? Im looking to pick one up and now im shooting myself for being the underbidder for the PSA 4 in Goodwin.

This has always been the #1 card on my wish list. I am kicking myself for not picking one up at a time when I probably could have semi-afforded one. I figured the card would appreciate over time, but I never expected this type of spike. I have a feeling we will be seeing more of these cards for sale in the upcoming auctions.

I think it's a mirage. You could've gotten a PSA 4 on ebay yesterday for ~$40K here: Link. And this same seller picked up this card on ebay auction for ~28K a few months ago. I think Ruth rookies will always be in high demand, but probably this was about 15-20 K too high.

I believe that one was the highest graded one auctioned off over the past several months and maybe that's why the price was higher than past results in similar grade. If more of these make their way out of the woodwork, it's very likely that results will drop for future ones IMHO.

Of course, there is always the situation where only two people are willing to go anywhere near that high on a card and ultimately end up driving up the price well beyond a reasonable point. With one of them getting it, that only leaves the other for next time and the price may not be nearly as high.
