Default Harpers Weekly Woodcuts

I saw the recent posts which inspired me to bid on a woodcut of the 1869 Red Stockings. I'm not really sure what the value of these are so I am curious as to your thoughts (ie. was this a good deal):

Thanks, Rob L

For future reference, 'Leslie's Illustrated', which was a similar magazine to Harper's Weekly, also issued a number of nice baseball woodcuts. In fact, the Holy Grail of baseball woodcuts (186? memorial to the singlar James Creighton) was in a Leslie's Illustrated.

For anybody who is interested, I am posting a Creighton Leslies double page print this weekend on ebay. It is a great piece, and they usually sell for a very reasonable price.

Scott, hasn't Elliot informed you about the Buy/Sell/Trade post? ... Just joking .... Though made a few years after his death, I beleive that this woodcut is the only vintage James Creighton item that is practically attainable for the normal collector ... There are perhaps a couple of original Creighton photos and that Peck & Snyder card (also made after his death), but those are like very expensive hen teeth. I've never even seen any of those offered for sale.

You meticulous metaphor mixer. Hen's teeth are actually very cheap when you can find them.

My meaning was that, even if I could find one, I couldn't afford it.

Most of the images of rare photos and other items that are mentioned on this board can be located in one or more of the VCBC back issues. I purchased five or so at a time until I had all of them, and I access several each week.

Harper's and Leslie's woodcuts are one of the most economical ways to obtain many vintage images of many 19th century players. They also look great framed up.

Rob, the buyer did very good on that Harpers piece. I paid twice for it 5 years ago in a frame. I though I did good?
