Default Mcgraw print defect

I noticed a Mcgraw that sold on the BST the other day that had the same red streak on the lower part of his jersey as the one shown below. I've had this card for a long time and thought I had seen another years ago. Over time, I had thought that it had been my imagination until the one popped up on the BST. Anyway, as I collect these odd cards, I thought it was pretty neat. Does anyone else have one of these in their collections?

Hey Martin,

Keen observation, neat!

What we need is a scan posted of the one that you say was on BST... and then one or two more that are out there. Then we'll have something.

Frank,
Well, it wasn't on the BST, it is on the first page of the Net 54 live auctions, my mistake. Craig Wright bought it. Wish I had seen it before the auction ended. any more out there?

Do the ones shown above all have different backs or are they the same?

Regarding the three on ebay. 2 are Piedmont 150 and 1 is Piedmont 350.

Again, none of the 3 show the red mark.

Default McGraw

I just checked my McGraw portrait and it does not have the red mark. It is a Piedmont 150 back. Maybe the red mark's only found with a certain back.

Both Mcgraws with the red streak have 150 series backs. Up until this year, I saw about every card that was on Ebay and the vintage links from this board. I think I have seen maybe three total over 5 + years.

Spaghetti sauce sounds good or how about "ketchup stain"?

Jantz

Nice observation. By the way, I didn't see any like this at the National last week.

Way cool that you discovered this! I looked through my "sold cards" image archive and found a P150 and P350, but neither had your mark. I'll keep an eye out though.

I love the "spaghetti sauce" variation name.

I thought I would revive this thread as I picked up my second version of this card. Only one I've seen in over two years. Also have only seen them with Piedmont 150 backs. My questions are what is the red mark and what caused it?
Can some of you printing experts help explain? Anyone else have one of these, if so, would love to see it.

Mike, nice card! Johnny, I figured you would have one by now. I am also having seller's remorse on the yellow-brown Mathewson.

I have to admit, when I acquired that card, although I definitely noticed the red mark and looped it to make sure it wasn't an 'alteration', I didn't get overly excited. But I also don't get excited over 'SHAPPE' or 'NODGRASS' cards.

This card is actually more interesting to me than the other two mentioned above, because the red in the portrait is all in the background - seems very odd that a splotch would be consistently printed in a spot where it sticks out like that. The 'SHAPPE' and 'NODGRASS' are only really interesting in that they didn't end up in the scrap heap.

Hi Martin,
I've been building a Harry Potter Lego castle with the kids since 10:30.....I'm glad they let me have a break to read my email and check the board. I knew I had this card set aside for the color difference, but had forgotten about the red mark...FYI, I have quite a few McGraw's and this is the only "red mark" one. Here is my back breakdown of regular cards:
2 Hindu's
3 Piedmont 150's
2 Sweet Cap 150's
2 Sovereign 350's

I think I have a few more, but the kids are yelling for me....

Be well Brian

Hi Mike,
Hope you and the family have a great Christmas.....
Be well Brian

Default McGraw magenta blotch

MERRY CHRISTMAS EARLY

Hey everyone....Mike, sweet score!....Brian, knew you would have one in the arsenal

Martin.....i'm sorry my bro, you know it's gone to a good home i really appreciate that you sold it to me....if i decide to sell one day, that one might have to go back to you........

I haven't picked one up(mcgraw)....but that chance sov 460 i picked up recently has a similiar magenta layer all over the card!!i thought it was ink or something....but looks to be done at factory....really weird....

the mcgraw blotch was probably a squirt or splash of magenta that settled in a groove on the plate and a few piedy 150 sheets slipped out....you guys are really getting decerning eyes, especially mike h....

this set is so kewl prob find these little anomalies every year, and still after 100 years things still get noticed or "discovered"...

peace

ho ho ho

I know this is an old thread, but thought it wouldn't hurt to see if there are some other examples to add to the five already posted. All seem to have a Piedmont 150 reverse. Check your McGraw no caps and see if you have one and let us know. Here are my two again.

Hi Mike,

I have four McGraw (no cap) PD 150's and none of them have that mark but I do have two Cicotte 150's that have a similar mark.

img745.jpg

The Cicotte mark continues onto a Seymour PD 150.

Seymour%20_5_ - Copy.jpg

Seymour [5] - Copy - Copy.jpg

Having this mark on Cicotte/Seymour makes sense considering they are also
along side each other on one of the PD 150 plate scratch sheets.

Good stuff Pat, not sure what it means, but those red streaks look like the one's on McGraw. And thanks for checking your McGraws.

I wonder what caused the red streaks? Anyone have guess?

Interesting that McGraw has two types of streak as well, one thick and one that is thinner. Seems like this ought to be an all or nothing error, though I suppose the red ink from this splash might have been thicker in part of the splash and therefore would have worn out at a differential rate over consecutive printings (i.e., the mark gradually shrank as the thinner parts of the splash were used up faster than the thicker parts of the splash). OR, that might all have just been a bunch of crap!

I know it’s an old thread, but some may not have seen it before. Check your McGraw no cap and see if we can add to the total of 6. It’s been 11 years since Martin(how are you Martin) made us aware of this, I’ll bet there are a few more of these residing in net54 collections.

Hey Mike,

I haven't seen any new examples recently but I do have these two scans in my
McGraw print flaw folder that haven't been posted in this thread.

Great Pat, thanks. Just what I was wanting, a running library of the McGraw cards. Your posts have been very helpful. Hopefully others will share scans of other McGraw cards with this red “splotch”. Kind of interesting that all are lower grade so far.
