Default Information on 1910 Schmelzer's Sporting Goods pins

Posted By: DJ

I know very little about pins and looking to learn about 1910 Schmelzer's Sporting Goods pins.

What can you tell me about these? How rare? What's the going rate on the stars like Joe Jackson and Christy Mathewson as well as the commons? How many in set? What is it's ACC name? Any scans to share?

Thank you!

DJ

These pins are featured in Steven Wong's Smithsonian Baseball book as part of Rob Lifson's collection....according to the book they are from a sporting goods company in Kansas City and are up there with the rarest of all pinbacks. It is assumed that there are at least nine different because they are all marked with a position (first base, pitcher, et cetera)although only 4 different are known (Charlie Deal, Joe Jackson, Mathewson and Butch Schmidt). I don't believe they have an ACC designation.

Schmelzer's pins are very rare one one of the nicest pin-back set of its era. They are about 2 1/2" in diameter. There are a few more players known including Cobb. These pins never show up for sale. If you are luck enough to find one buy it. Condition on these pins are not really the issue as they are so tough to find you should get them anyway you can. There is also a 1899 Schmelzer's Advertising pin with a baseball as its background and Shmelzers in text on the front. This pin is around 3 1/2". I do believe there will be a group of these coming up in auction soon.

Thanks for your assistance! I was going through the Smithsonian book and saw them and it peaked me to do a query where I basically came up empty.
