I had just printed out the form on SGC's website to have this card regraded. However, the corners might be too rounded and the back a tad too dirty for a 40 - what do you guys think? The card doesn't have any creases or paperloss. And, at first, looks like it is undergraded. I just hate wasting $170 + shipping to SGC on a card that might end up back in a 30 holder, so I thought I would ask everyone's opinion here before I make up my mind.

I echo Steve's words- very nice 30, but too weak for a 40. Great card!

I agree with Barry and Steve also; the card looks to be accurately graded.

Edited to add that most importantly, Joe's lips seem to be where they're supposed to be

It looks like 30 to me also. It would be very surprised to see SGC upgrade it. However, as you know it's awesome just the way it is. Very nice

This card is VG. Send it to PSA and get the 3 it deserves.

I've seen worse graded VG3. Creaseless is a bonus for you.

Since the board is split look at it this way- if it comes back a 30 you are out $150; if it comes back a 40 you are up a few thousand.

Hi Scott -
I think the card is accurately graded, however, I would still send it in.
For the $170 bucks, its definately worth the gamble. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Tony

if it comes back a 20 you are really screwed. That is a very worn card, it belongs in a good holder.

Don't resubmit it: with a card that dirty, there's bound to be some small creases that you just can't see when it's in its holder. I say, it's a fairly graded 30, keep it in the case.

This is like a real life Deal or No Deal.

The bank has offered $258,000 (the card as graded) and you still have the $1 million dollar prize on the board. You have to open one more case (resubmit). If you don't find the million (they up your card a grade), your offer goes up but if you do find the million (they find a small crease) your offer drops a lot (card decreases in value).

What do you do?? Deal or No Deal???

Cue the lights and crowd noise.

David

It should be a 30, even though I have seen worse 40's by the dozens. I think I will simply keep it as it is. I really hate sending cards like this out anyway - knowing my luck, it would get lost in the mail or get creased when SGC cracks it out or something. Besides, it is really about the card and not the holder I guess. Thanks for all your opinions!

I also see it as being accurately graded.

At current standards, i believe that the chance of it coming back SGC40, is pretty slim.

Thus, i'd stick with the 30.

A great card however.

I was going to say the same thing....it's a great card and it's the card not the holder. I would expect that card to get top dollar of what a 30 would go for.....maybe even a 40....hopefully people buying at this level will buy the card (I think they do/will) and the card will realize the right value..I think it's fairly graded but have seen worse 40's...good luck with it...

I guess the big question for me is "why?"

Is there a reason why the card needs to be in the highest possible holder? Not that there's a problem with that; some people prefer to collect that way. If you want the card in the highest possible holder, then go ahead and resubmit it a few times. I'll bet the difference between a 30 and a 40 in this card would offset the grading fees.

But if you want it graded accurately, then it seems that it already is.

If the card were in my collection, I'd keep it right where it is. Looks great, and I'll bet it's a pleasure to own.

-Al

If it was mine, I would leave it the way it is...knowing SGC's grading standards I think its more likely to come back the same grade..though on a good day..it may get a bump because of the clarity of the image. Nice card irregardless!

to get regraded because of the insurance for this high priced card. It is a good investment if it grades up, could add thousands to value.

Paul- it's at the $100 grading tier, and registered mail each way would be about $25. So $150 is closer to the total cost.

to have the card delivered back. So, you have the $100 grading fee, $20 Overnight fee and $50 for the $13k of insurance = $170. Plus, that doesn't count the overnight fee I was going to use to get the card to SGC with insurance. So, not feeling certain the card would upgrade, I will just keep it where it is.

The market is efficient. It will eventually land in the highest slab possible unless you hold it and never sell.

If it were my card, I would walk it by SGC's booth at nationals...

...about this card, either in person (preferable), by telephone or on-line. Bring the card or send scans and get further information about why they felt it was a 30. Ask one of their graders at an in-person show or in NJ whether they think it might warrant a re-look. I've had those kinds of discussions with them at shows and they've been very informative. In one instance I recall, I was encouraged to resubmit a 20 that I thought was way to nice not to be a 30. I resubmitted it a few months later and it did come back a 30, though to be fair, I had cracked it before resubmission -- something I would NOT encourage in this case, lest it come back a grade lower or worse.

I've got plenty of 40's that look like your 30, but if those are scuff marks on the front, then you're probably out of luck.

is to talk to SGC in person. Especially if you can visit them.

A few times (I think 3 times total) I told SGC that I disagreed with a grade.... and they gave it due diligence with the graders and came back with their reasoning for the grade.

I did have success once with getting it upped a grade as they agreed it deserved the higher grade.

This was after I paid for the slabbing - so I don't know if there is a 'check the grade' fee in your case, but for me it was free.

I'm not sure you would have such a high-percentage chance on the upgrade....
but you wouldn't have to ship it, or crack it out, or have it leave your hands -
possibly wouldn't have to pay a dime...
and you could possibly walk away with an upgrade... or at the very least hear their viewpoint on why it received that grade.

edit to say: I type slowly, but it looks like T206 and I had similar thoughts.
