Default My Favorite Wagner....And your's is ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

Of all the Wagner cards in my collection, my favorite is his Batting pose from
the E90-1 set. I know this same pose is repeated in the subsequent E-type sets;
however, I do not have any of those cards. I like this one the best since he
has a youthful appearance. All his other cards from various sets depict him as
an older looking man.

So, which Wagner card is your favorite.....and why ?

love the close-up. the robust body, the wrinkling of the uniform and the shadow reminds me of those greek statues i read about in art history class.

No plug for the Reccius Wagner from me.

My favorite one was the 1912 Plow's Candy that I lost in the final minutes of bidding.

Can someone find the scan?

A very nice bunch of Wagners, the D381 is my favorite so far. So expressive and detailed, it's great.

I love Colgan Wagner and would kill to own a red boarder Colgan. I've never even seen one.

I like to sit outside, drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home, I would be arrested. So, I go to baseball games and fit right in.

Hey Quan,

Similar, but definitely not the same shot.
Lots of differences, sleeveles versus full sleeves under short sleeves, buttoned up shirt versus unbuttoned, head position and cap position different......others but can't be bothered hitting the back button and forward buttons to list them.....

And, my 2nd Wagner card from the E90-1 set.......how can you beat that colorful
sunset over the mountains in this card's background. It reminds me of the N162
Cap Anson card.

I agree with Joe....my first thought was this one as it is a great Horner type portrait...then I looked at the Fleischmann's and picked it....this is from the Trucker Boy find in Ca a few years ago...He had a price of $1500 as a min bid, on ebay, and a very fuzzy picture. His one line description had about 3 misspelled, 1 syllable words in it and no one bid..He put it up again and no one still bid on it.....I called him and got it for $1000 and the rest is history...

For a long time this Wagner was my favorite. My card, by todays's standards,
would have graded a "5". I didn't pay much for it back in the late '80s. Had I
kept it and sold it in today's market (figuring by what you paid), I would have
realized at least a 1000% gain. So, why did I part with this card ?

Well, I traded it for a 1949 Bowman Satchell Paige (grade 6 or 7) back about
8 years ago. At the time I needed a nice Paige in order to sell the 1949 set.
And, I broke one of my "trading rules"....don't trade pre-War stuff for post-War
stuff.
Another, factor for trading off this Wagner was I had finally acquired the two
Wagner cards for my E90-1 set and they looked much prettier.

You reminded me to show-off my 1949 Leaf. I hope you don't mind.
I acquired this one from Frank Nagy back in the '80s.

OK, my question....what was Leaf trying to tell us with Wagner & Tobacco ?

Ted:

I was going to post my Leaf as well when I posted my Colgan's, but it's not pre-war (unless we're counting the Korean War [or was that a police action?], but I digress).

Tobacco? Honus Wagner? I thought he was eating candy! Leaf was a candy company, right?

So, far Leon has allowed us to post 1949 LEAF cards. I have also posted my
Ruth and Paige on other Threads without any problem. There are too many
unexplained mysteries regarding this set and this certainly makes for very
interesting conversation on this Forum.

The old Chicago based Leaf Gum Co in recent times goes by Leaf Confectionary.
So, you are correct; however, the impression that most have is that this card
depicts Wagner putting a piece of chewing Tobacco to his mouth.

Incidently, I am in the process of writing an article for the Old Cardboard
Magazine on the 1949 LEAF BB card set.

Hey Guys,
As everyday participants I have no issue with talking about '49 Leaf. I try to use common sense in stuff. 1949 is almost pre-war, we aren't talking about them everyday, and it's by regular contributors. No worries. Now if you guys start talking Donruss or '84 Fleer I might say something......take care and carry on...

I do not own any of the below but here are my favorite Wagners in no real order.

J=K Candy-Same potrait used in most other Wagner cards but placed on an orange backgroud like his T206 and his head is diecut.
Voskamps-A pose found on no other Wagner cards and near impossible, plus it is much bigger than the run of the mill E or T card.
E224-1 Texas Tommy-A Great sepia toned action shot, a snazzy name, and one of his toughest cards.
E135-Another great action shot showing how strong and powerful his swing and arms were.
T5-Oversized and a real action shot of Wagner bending down picking up a ground ball.

Wagner's 1910 Orange Border is also looking very nice...

How about adding your M116 (blue) Wagner to our gallery of cards here ?

It definitely is one of the more aesthetically appealing Wagner cards.
