Since the 4th was getting kind of long.......

Unfortunately, the entire piece would not fit on my scanner but here is an 1874 Philadelphia Athletics Woodcut w/Cap Anson on his earliest baseball collectible (I believe)........

Cap Anson is pictured on a Rockford Forest City's CDV or Cabinet photo from 1871.

There is also a cabinet photograph of the 1867 Marshalltown team with a 15-year-old Anson. It is unmistakenly him.

Both the cabinet and CdV are unique, and both are owned by one of our regular posters.

WOW!!! Thanks, Dan & Barry, I learned two things today. Can anyone post a scan of the 1867 Marshalltown team cabinet photo?

Phil- a picture of Anson with the Marshalltown team appears on page 18 of Stephen Wong's "Smithsonian Baseball." If you don't have a copy I will try to post a scan later today.

Phil:

I have that exact piece framed and mounted on my office wall. Mine was published in the July 25, 1874 issue of Harpers Weekly and is so noted on the header. It is on newspaper stock. What stock is yours on and is it also from Harpers or is it the original from which Harpers took it ? Thanks.

Rob:

This one is too big for even Beckett's holers.

Barry:

If you get a chance to post it later, that would be great.

Mark:

Mine is the exact same one that you mentioned.

Here is the Marshalltown team. Sorry it's a little small. Anson is standing on the far right.

Anson was also on this 1872 CDV / Trade Card. It is also owned by a board member.

I think Anson is also pictured in a Notre Dame '69 CDV.

Hi Andy!

Jimmy- never heard of a Notre Dame CdV with Anson. Can you confirm it exists? Did he go there?

Barry, 'Cap' Anson and his brother went to ND in 1868.
I remember hearing that there's a copy of the CDV in the ND archive dept.

Here's my contribution to the Anson show and tell. Thought to be 1876.

Barry played around the same time as Anson and was nice enough to share this image.

And a very rare early image of Anson indeed, with fellow ball player Barry "Shuttlecock" Sloate.

Barry tells me this is from the very early 70's. It's really amazing to me to see how much hairstyles and clothes have changed since back then isn't?

Jeff - great pickup on that Collins! If I didn't already have a Collins for my wall display, I would have been after it.

Matt,
For $13.70 you can't go too wrong. Besides down the road I can always pass it off as a blank-back proof, right? happy.gif
