Default Advice: 2019 Box to Rip with Son

I mainly collect pre-war but would like to get my 7-year-old son a box of 2019 cards for Christmas. Ideally the cost will be under $100. I would like for there to be a decent number of packs and cards/pack (that will be the fun part for him) and to have a shot at something with rare cards, inserts, autos, etc.

Any advice you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The 2019 Topps Heritage Minors set is really nice. Every box has at least 1 autograph and 1 relic card. He'll get to see all the guys who are next up before they make it big. The set is modeled after the 1970 Topps set too, so the cards look and feel vintage, which I always like about Heritage. A box will set you back about $60.

Thanks for the suggestion. Does that issue only have minor league players? He will be really interested in getting some current Milwaukee Brewers players.

The Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox and Cubs consider the Milwaukee Brewers as minor leaguers. If you cannot afford Gerrit Cole, you're just also-rans in their opinion.

The Minors set only has minor league players but the regular Heritage set has the major league players. It's just that the major league box comes without a guaranteed autograph.

I think stadium club cards look nice. Not a ton of huge cards but the pics are also top notch.

If you want a more vintage feel to the cards do Topps Gypsy Queen. It is my son and my favorite every year. They used to have T206 size mini parallel cards in packs but did away with those a few years back. Vintage card stock feel and 2 autographs per box if you do hobby and the 2019 should be obtainable for about $85-100/box

Also, there are people that just open boxes of cards on YouTube for people to watch. I would suggest just spending a little time and watch some of those people open some of the boxes and get a feel for the type of product that feels like it would be fun to open for you guys. Some of the people that open the cards are entertaining, some much less so.

Wal-Mart also has a Topps Holiday set. Pretty nice last year, I haven't seen the cards this year. (My box is "don't open till Christmas" )
And last year there was a short printed card that everyone was after.

I've seen singles from 2019 Topps Holiday on ebay already, so it must be available somewhere.

Wal-mart. I got a box the other day and told my wife she could decide if it was a Christmas present or if I could just open it.

I haven't seen it since, so hopefully I'll see it on the 25th....

I'll echo the suggestion for Topps Holiday from Walmart. Fun little set with some cool variations that your kid might enjoy.

Agreed, Topps Holiday are fun, especially this year with the many Short Prints. If you do RIP them, make sure you watch for the short numbers on the back of the cards as many of them are hard to spot on the front. The serial numbers at the bottoms of the cards end in 057 for the base cards. Short prints end in 063, 065, and 067 I believe.

For pure baseball card enjoyment I would recommend a regular Topps Hobby box. It has it all (at least one auto or relic, subsets, inserts, serial numbered cards, short prints, and a chance to get something rare like printing plates, 1 of 1 cards etc.). Looks like Series 2 is already a little pricey, but you can still find bargains for Series 1.

Then if he likes the experience, you could use 2020 as a chance to build the entire 2020 set by hand (get him a box of Series 1, Series 2, and Update throughout the year) for birthday, Christmas, whenever. They are usually about $60 per box when they first come out.
