Displaying Photographs

I have a few vintage Burke photographs that I am considering having framed for displaying. What advice could you give as to protect the photos? To date I have been told to make sure I get UV glass and that double matting + keeps the glass from contacting the photo and running the risk that the picture adheres to the glass over time.

I love the photos and would like to display them but want them protected as well.

Any advice is appreciated.

Correct... don't let the photos make direct contact with the glass. Also...

* Utilize mounting corners under the mats, to secure the photos in place.

* Do not use tape or adhesive to secure the photos to the mats

* Hang photos high enough to keep out of reach of small children and pets.

* Be sure to keep the photos out of direct sunlight at all times.

* Try to do the work yourself, as store personnel won't care for the photos the way you do.

Few things are more irritating than fingerprints on the photos, once they are sealed under the glass.

You want UVA and UVB protecting glass or plastic. Your local frame shop will likely be knowledgeable about this subject and carry the product.

I would suggest framing them yourself and saving a few dollars. Frame shops charge an arm and a leg for the same thing you can do yourself.

You can order custom cut mats and custom frames (with the option of UV protective acrylic and acid free backing) for much cheaper than a frame shop will charge.

I've never dealt with pictureshields.com , but they offer inexpensive inserts with very strong UVA/UVB protection. They appear to be thin plastic inserts you stick in the frame with the glass. You can upgrade the UV protection on glass frames you already own.
