Default January 2024 Pick Ups

The year started out great for me. I stumbled upon this 1973 Willie Stargell bank on IG. Tried to get others to buy it because it’s intact with no repairs and is actually autographed by Pops. These banks are both rare and very cool. It was also way underpriced. I couldn’t find anyone else willing to pull the trigger so I figured why not me? It’s the only signed example I’ve ever seen with a production run of 40-50 it’s likely the only one. Now I have two.

Was able to add some items to my Pirates collection, these all originate from the Bert Blyleven collection

1. Baseball from Bert’s 4th win for the Pirates in 1979

2. Final out ball from when the Pirates clinched the NLCS championship over the Reds - complete game by Bert Blyleven

3. A large commemorative metal plaque given to the players .

The Stargell bank is pretty cool. Do other Pirates exist in bank form?

Thank you.

Blown away by some of the items at RMY that ended tonight.

Was able to snag this Lefty Grove photo without breaking the bank. Lots of others I would have pursued if the budget was there.

Fell asleep but left a max bid and happy to wake up to see I won this Panoramic photo of the 1927 Philadelphia Royal Giants featuring two of my favorites Biz Mackey and Andy Cooper which toured Japan in 1927.

Congrats! I was wondering who might win that. I had wanted to pursue that hard, but didn't have the budget at the moment.

Congrats on an incredible item!

Latest addition to the collection which has a personal meaning to our family. My wife’s cousin plays football at the the Air Force Academy and we were able to acquire his jersey and pants that he wore in the Air Force vs Navy game this year. It honors the Doolittle Raiders from World War 2. I’m a history buff so I was very excited with the reference to Doolittle raiders!

^^^^ Crazy cool uniform. I’m guessing Air Force probably won? Did #62 enter the game? The uniform looks pristine.

He did not play in the game and I agree that it’s a cool uniform. Airforce beat Navy 17-6 in the game

Default PAA Forbes Field Ticket, 1909.

Here is an interesting ticket that I think our Pittsburgh residents would appreciate. The Pittsburgh Athletic Association (PAA) was an important and influential social club and athletic club that opened in 1908. They were an iconic fixture of Oakland, two blocks from Forbes Field. They fielded many accomplished teams in track, hockey and basketball.

This ticket was for their first outdoor track meet at Forbes Field, in October 1909 - just three months after Forbes Field opened.

As a side note, the Earl Christy girls or Gibson Girls are pretty neat too.

Thank you. I don't know what Freud would say about my fascination with scoreboards. There is another version (below) of the scoreboard, which I do not own. The Duquesne football scoreboards are pretty slick as well, but I don't collect football.

Default T.R. Sanders Cabinet Photo

Very pleased to win this from REA. This is Thomas Richard Sanders, pitcher in 1899 and 1900, coached both years by Hughie Jennings. I’ve been looking for this cabinet photo for many years, after first seeing a copy a long time ago. What makes this very special is that I have T.R. Sanders’ Cornell baseball cap. The cap has been a highlight of my collection for a long time. Glad to now have this cabinet, which is a great complement to the cap.
