Default Matty sig

Posted By: Bryan

I need some advice. I fellow collector of mine has a really great looking sig of Christy Mathewson. The sig is a cut but is amazing. It is not verified and I wish I had a picture to post and show but my question is what is a fair asking price for this? He has said that he will part with for $1000 - $1500 for the cut which is framed with an old matty picture. Is it worth the cash or should get the sig verified. He told me that the sig came from California, but I forget which shop it came from - one of the big internet shops. Any advice?

I would have it authenticated first. His signature is heavily forged and is not a very difficult for forgers. Can get a photo of it to post?

Christy Mathewson's is one of the rarest and desired of all Hall of Fame baseball players. It is also one of the mort forged. The average buyer should only purchase it if it has been formally judged authentic by a top autograph expert.

Dennis is correct. Even if it is authentic, you will likely have to get an LOA anyway if you ever try to resell it.

An authentic Mathewson cut would go for at least $1,500. Everyone is right-you need to get this authenticated. If the seller only gives you a certain amount of time to have it examined, there are several authenticators who are thorough and have fairly quick turn around times. In all honesty though, unless the seller is providing a money back guarantee you should probably pass. It is a widely forged signature.

I have three legit autographs for you to use to compare. Write me.

David is correct. Many matty fakes out there. he only used two types of pen ink and rarely but sometimes pencil. A "cut" is probably worth $800 if real.A sig on a photo is worth 30% more and a check,of which I have from the Mechanics bank is the best authentic option. That may cost you upwards of $5k in Mastro or $3676.44 in a private deal. ( I wrote that part for Greg's entertainment though the figures are probably about right. )
