Default April Pickups

I'll start it off this month -- and I'm not making an April Fool's joke here! -- I am absolutely thrilled to be adding a new signed T206 card to my collection, thanks to a trade with another collector who has his own awesome signed T206 collection going. It's nice when collecting competitors can mutually work to fill holes in each other's collections! Thanks Art! (Net54 ID: rebelsart)

Heinie Zimmermann (2x WS Champ) is the 44th unique pose in my signed T206 collection:

Default Wished it was an April Fool's Joke

Just "picked up" 7-8" inches of heavy wet snow. Wished it was an April Fool's joke here in Maine.

Some guys buy a Porsche or get a young girlfriend for their midlife crisis. I prefer fishing. Caught this on the very day I turned 40.

Awesome card! As a signed vintage collector myself, I am quite envious of your collection...keep it up!

Technically this one arrived yesterday, but I'll post it here. Was an impulse buy to get use of the 'Spend $50+ get 10% ebay bucks' promo they had going. Dickman (D. 81) has a great looking sig. (Not much of a career though)

I saw this kind of chucked in the back corner of a showcase. At $35, I thought it was a bargain. Reasonably tough issue and a hall of famer to book albeit a football hall of famer.

I was the owner of that drum hofman from about 1992-2001 or so... I sold it and bought a leather reclining chair that my cat proceeded to destroy with the proceeds! I bought that card at a Silver Spring Armory show in Silver Spring Maryland when I was living with my parents in the year 1992 or so! The card was listed for $37 and while I wanted to haggle because it was so beat up I decided against it!!!

Very interesting. You do realize that the original game pieces were issued and in subsequent years, stickers were issued to put over the bottom part of the piece to reflect the players for that particular year. It is likely that if you removed to paper covering the bottom of one of your pieces, there would be another player printed there.

Some info from OCB:
From 1920's game by National Game Makers of Wash, DC
Game: "Major League Ball--The Indoor BB Game Supreme"
Fourteen die-cut player cards used for each team
All 16 teams represented; roster varied each year
Generic player position poses repeated for each team
Same pose for each position; coloring keyed to team

So I wouldn't try taking the paper off of them as it will most likely be blank underneath.

Definitely would leave it alone. Just found it interesting. Is a way of dating a particular year as my Great great uncle was in the 1921 issue of the game and there was no sticker on his game piece.

Actually there could be printing from the initial 1921 printing or perhaps a "sticker" from a prior year (or blank). Ironically, neither of Kenny's two Zach Wheat's depict the left fielder from the game.

Default MLB Die-cuts

Kenny, here's a pic of my complete sheet of the Washington Senators team. Most likely, it was issued in 1921, as 1921 was the last year that Jose Acosta and Frank O'Rourke played for the Senators, and 1921 was the first year for Goose Goslin and George Mogridge.

Hey Val, that Joe Judge would look good in my collection. Think you could poke it out and sell it to me?-- I think those pieces go for $30-40 or so each.
Appreciate it.

Sure! I bid on that Gertenrich until it started to leave my budget (i.e. pretty early). I thought the card looks nicer than the grade, but that can be said for all Joe Judge cards .

I suppose I've got no shot on the Holland Creameries Joe Judge coming up in REA?

The Gertenrich-Judge card went for more than I was hoping to get it for, but it was my numero uno "had-to-have-it" card in the LOTG auction.

I do have all of the Hollands cards, except the near impossible Peckinpaugh, but the majority are in pathetic condition, including Judge. I have been slowly upgrading my Hollands, as my budget will allow. Whether I go after the Judge example in REA depends what other goodies in REA appeal to me more.

The Hooper signed Cracker Reprint card was produced by TCMA back in 1972.

That is a great card Orlando and the "Wagner" of Postcards. Congrats on the pickup as you probalbly won't see any more of those come up in public auction anytime soon.

Here are a couple of My April pickups which my Birthday is this month as I turn 50!

Rob, thanks for the kind words. I suspect you are the only one collecting the Gertenrich set. The reason I wanted to win this card so badly is that it fits both of my top collecting focuses - type cards and cards of all the players on the 1924 Senators championship team.

I agree, the Gertenrich cards are tough to find w/o paper loss on the back - ditto for the Holmes to Homes cards. And, I'm anal about not having paper loss on the backs of my type cards that have neat ads on the backs.

This just arrived today, courtesy of our b/s/t section here. One half of a pair I've been after for a while.
