Fairly common cards printed in Germany (obviously) on very thin card stock. I believe they were part of an album which promoted Sanella margerine. The Ruth can usually be had on ebay in the $50-100 range.

112 card set inserted in German margarine packs. Babe is the only American BB Player included. There are 4 types of cards and type 2 is the most common [PSA has graded 210 of the Babe]. Fairly easy to find. I bought a PSA 8 Type 2 Ruth on EBAY for $150 in Sept. 2005.

The complete album is commonly on eBay. Goes for around $75. There is also a catcher (could be Japanese) included.

Nearly 2.5 years ago I sold a Type 2 Graded a BGS/BVG 8 for $560. The card had some solid sub grades:

Centering, 10
Corners, 7.5
Edges, 9.0
Surface, 8.5

High bidder thought it should have been an 8.5.

PSA 8s commonly sell for $300, though that one for $150 would be a steal!

It's a nice looking card in person, better than the strip cards. If there was a best Pre-War cards for collectors on a budget, I might nominate this one.

I agree with you on some of the strip cards. However, there are some Ruth strips that are gorgeous. I almost picked up a Sanella, but European cards depicting Ruth look almost generic to me. Kind of like the "collector's issues" of their day. Perhaps it's a language barrier issue, but European cards of both sports and non-sports subjects just don't seem to go anywhere over here.

I had been reading aboug German history when I won a Senella Ruth, so I found a 1933 German issue of Ruth interesting.

The one to find is the Astra Margarine back. Same set but back has "Astra" instead of "Sanella". They are extremely rare, Ive only seen 2-3 ever, compared to hundreds of Sanella's.

I did get lucky and picked a Jakob Brindel (Wrestling) Astra card. Got to be more out there.

Shit, I missed that. Whoever got it got a heck of a deal. Astra backs are hella rare. Took me years to pick up a Schmeling for my boxing type card collection.
