Default Help Identifying Ruth n Gehrig Card

Posted By: Nick G

Hey guys im hoping someone can help me..

I recently picked up some cards that i have never seen before.

They are blank backed, medium stock. They are approx 1.5 x 2.5

Hand cut as you can see, but they look nicer then the typical W strip cards.

Any help as far as what they are, and value, is appreciated.

Thanks

Nick

those are cut from a larger card that consisted of 4 such photos. the designation eludes me for the moment...but they're not strip cards...just cut from a larger 4 in 1 card. Most likely from the early 30's...I'm not sure what value they have...$50-60 for the gehrig...maybe up to $100 for the ruth...probably a little less.

Those look like they were cut off a 4X1 Exhibit Card

These have been cut from an Exhibit 4/1. I'm not sure which year, but it is probably 1934 or 1935. Someone else could probably help nail down the year for you. I don't have access to a baseball card catalog at the moment.

The Exhibit 4/1's use the same player pictures over several years, so it may be nearly impossible to pinpoint that exact year that those cut-outs were made. In my guess of the year above, I was assuming that the Ruth and Gehrig came from the same 4/1.

Ruth and Gehrig are on the same 4in1 Exhibit in the 1929-30 set, and the 1931-32 set. Gehrig is also on some of the other 4in1 Exhibits.

The 1929-30 and 1931-32 Exhibit 4/1's do not have blank backs like these cut-outs.

I'm pretty sure its from the 1934 set, they were both on the same card and that color was used that year with nothing on the back, in 1935 Ruth had a different pic, in 29-30 and 31-32 they all had print on the back, 1933 gehrig was not included and that color combo was not used. Here is a pic of the 1934 -

Seems to me that the color of what Nick has might not be correct for the years when the combination was possible.

Nick, have you any real 4in1's?? Have you seen or held one??

I recently picked up this Gehrig. I was told it came from a 1934 4-in-1 Exhibit, even though the color doesn't match. Is it possible more than one color was used in a specific 4-in-1 set?

I think 1934s are available in various colors. There are some yellow ones that don't look as good to me as the blacks, sepias, and blues.

I think all of the Exhibit 4/1's come in different colors. I know the 1934's come in at least two different colors (blue and green), but other colors like brown probably exist as well.

1934's come in 4 colors, one of which matches the ruth and gehrig. I dont see any other year they can be from.
