I thought an easy show-all thread might be just the thing for this board right now, especially as we're attracting plenty of new collectors trying to focus their collecting habits. Tell us what you collect and why. And show some CARDS while you're at it. Let's get back to square cardboard things, that's what it's all about, right?

Hey folks, though I live in Philly now, I grew up in North Carolina watching the Durham Bulls. So I'm a big fan of Southern minor league baseball. I'm working on the T209-1 set which has some absolutely fantastic color prints, and I'll also pick up other such cards such as T209-II, T206 SLer's and T210 when the opportunity arises.

I also just love 19th century Victorian-style baseball cards. No real reason behind it, but how can you not get a kick out of cards like this:

I'll go a little off-topic with this N476 Buffalo Bill since he is a subject in some Baseball sets like N28 and n162.

I'm a die-hard Red Sox fan, so part of my focus is a Red Sox type collection:

I also collect the T206 set because of it's overall aesthetics and connection to MLB's history:

I collect the following sets: T209-2, T210, T211, E106 and B.H. Voskamp's. All of these sets are obscure and present a great challenge no matter how much money you have. I also enjoy picking up esoteric 19th century pieces. The Anson N28 certainly isn't in that category but I really like the image.

Hello All,

I haven't posted much lately; I've been really busy at work, but this topic is refreshing when compared with all of the recent posts, so I want to support it with a response. Learning about pre-war cards and sharing our collections is what interests me the most in Net54.

Now as to the question, I actually have four collections going on at the same time.

I'm working on the T206 monster and I'm getting close to 100 cards at the present time. I only collect crease free cards with no paper loss. 2/3 of my collection is ungraded and 1/3 graded 3-5 with 10 hofers and a couple of Southern Leaguers.

I also have an interest in 1952 Topps & Bowmans. I have about 1/4 of the Topps set and over 1/2 of the Bowman set. All ungraded in EX-NM condition.

1961 Topps is also a favorite set of mine. I'm only missing about twenty cards to have a complete set. This year is dear to me because I loved collecting it as a boy. No, I didn't save any of my childhood collection.

I also have complete NM Topps sets from 1973, 74, 76, 77, 78 and 79. Eventually I hope to finish the decade.

I like collecting cards from different eras because there is always something interesting to buy on eBay. I buy all kinds of vintage cards and then resell them on eBay and some on the BST. I have to buy and sell to build my collection because I don't have a lot of disposable income. But I must be doing pretty good because I have only been collecting for about five years and have accumulated quite a few cards. I have to admit that my wife helps me out by covering my postage. (She is a real sweetheart!)

I don't have a high dollar collection; my most valuable card is only worth a couple of hundred bucks, but as a whole the collection is pretty nice. Not a beater in the lot. Someday I would like to put the highlights of my collection on line, but as a teacher it is hard to find the time. The thread asked for pictures so here is my latest pickup for my T206 collection. Nothing fancy, but I like it, and it is representive of the type of T206s that I can afford.

Enjoy collecting cards and the friendship that so many of you have with each other. People make it a wonderful hobby.

Best wishes,

Joe

I'm a HOF type card collector, and why..... because I finally found something to collect that speaks to me. I love sports, I love art, and these bits of cardboard capture the magic of both.

The first set I completed was a 104-1/d359 set of all images. I completed the set earlier this year (thanks Tony). I have always concentrated on Wagner, Cobb, and Jackson. I recently sold many cards to afford some new purchases. Here are a few cards I have left...

I buy whatever card makes my jaw drop.

Seriously. The chin goes down and I know I want that card!

Right now that seems to mean fewer cards but more expensive cards.

After seeing this thread, a collecting goal of mine is to have a poker game with Steve Murray, JC, Jim B., and Jeff Williams and to win all of their cards

I collect baseball and golf - two games with an awesome history....

....was to bring down the Monster, and my collection still shows vestiges of that battle -- my Plank and my Magie harken back to a time when I wanted to get as close to set completion as possible. But now my goals are decidedly different. For the past six months, all of my new additions have been autographed pre-war cards. I am not showing them all off yet because I want to have them published with an article I am writing for Old Cardboard or SGC Collector Magazine. But I'll share one for this thread:

I collect 1938 Goudey baseball in higher-grade, and have a complete set (currrently being regraded at SGC) that I've been upgrading for several years.

I also have a collection of 50 (mostly prewar) HOF cards that I consistently add to and subtract from. This is a relatively new thing that evolved out of a HOF type card set that I began getting bored with because I had no interest in acquiring cards of people like Sparky Anderson. Therefore I decided to limit my collection to just 50 cards - each time I purchase a new card for the collection, I have to choose another to get rid of. Here is one:

You can view all of the 50 here, if you're so inclined: http://www.swingbattaswing.com/page1/page1.html

I also collect 1921 E121s with the Henry Johnson Confectioners back. If you have any, I'm a buyer.

I am also about 40% of the way through a nice, low-to-mid grade T205 set that I enjoy very much.

I have some other stuff too, but the above is really what's in "heavy rotation" in my collection.

Why do I collect what I do? I have no frickin' idea.

Like Jason (where do you live Jason?), I'm a big Red Sox fan. My collection is limited to the Sox before they sold the Babe. Most of it is non-card, but here's probably my rarest "card" (I'm pretty sure it's not a photograph) for Jason to see:

By the way, that's a Great Jimmy Collins card, Dan.

That's also a great card of Ryan, Zach. Somebody should tell SGC that he (nor did anyone for that matter) didn't play for the Red Sox in 1872. Kind of sad a grading company makes a mistake that bad (still a GREAT card though despite the label they put on it).

My favorite item to collect are Baseball themed Victorian Trade Cards. I started about 6 or 7 years ago and have accumulated over 200 cards. There have been some great trade cards on eBay lately; unfortunately, I've either forgotten to follow up my early bids with closing bids or some cards have been selling for more than i'm willing to pay. I'd love to put together a master Merchants Gargling Oil set (with all the different printers and styles).

I also love 19th century sporting goods receipts with Baseball themes in the headers. I only have 3 of them, but I am always looking out formore.

In addition to cards, I collect stadium postcards. It brings together the history of the game, the places it was played, and a study of 20th century architecture.

I also collect Red Belt postcards. If anyone has any for sale, please let me know.

Well, only one rubber stamp...that of Howe McCormick. Don't know all that much about the guy. If the public records my sister and I have found are correct, he was born in 1895, served in WWI, married soon after, had one child, a daughter, and died in 1976. His daughter died in 2005, leaving no heirs.

I got the first card (Davis) in 1993. Got the latest (Ames) three days ago (thanks, Chuck). The best is probably Clarke. So far, two Hindu's, one Old Mill, the rest have been Piedmont. Since concentrating on only this cards since May, I've gotten them from 14 different states, as far east as NY, south as FL and TX, north from MI, and west from CA and WA.

If anyone has any in their collection, and are willing to part with them, please let me know. I know I've missed a Warhop, Moran, Waddell, J.J. Clarke and one other off eBay just before I focused my collection. I've also missed a Camnitz/arms crossed from a dealer in CA. But any I can get my hands on to rebuild Howe's collection are greatly appreciated. Please let me know.

Ed

for instance, the easy ones, like Tinker to Evers to Chance...

a more difficult one...the famous Merkle bonehead play...NY Giants facing the Cubs...1908 season, Because of Merkle's play, the Giants were forced to play the Cubs in a makeup game to decide who would go to World Series, Cubs went on to win their last World Series...(maybe this game is the real curse and not the stupid billy goat!)

Fred Merkle (running from first to second and never getting there)
Moose McCormick (running from third to home)
Al Bridwell (winning hit)
Jake Pheister (pitcher on mound at end of game)
Rube Kroh (center fielder who picked up ball)
Iron Man Joe McGinnity (wrestled ball from Cubs and threw it into stands)
Johnny Evers (alert 2nd baseman who touched second and, eventually got Merkle out)
Christy Mathewson (celebrating with Merkle running into outfield..)
John McGraw (manager of Giants)

Another theme...famous Snodgrass dropped ball which caused the NY Giants to lose the 1912 World Series

Fred Snodgrass (dropped easy fly ball in outfield)
But 2nd, and more costly gaffe occurred when 3 people descended on Tris Speaker's popup and didn't catch it...
Cristy Mathewson (called off Merkle on the popup)
Chief Meyers (was slow to get to it
Fred Merkle (should have caught it, but stopped
Tris Speaker (who hit popup that either Mathewson, Meyers, or Merkle should have caught...)

Funny, I was going to mention that Mark seems to collect in a similar fashion to Gil - by the time I got to post it, there's Gil, asking Mark a question.

I think this thread is really cool. It's great to see everyone's reasons for collecting what they do.

For the themes I mentioned, I use the T206 cards...another theme I am working on is the 1934 All Star game when Carl Hubbell struck out Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons, and Cronin in succession..in that case...I would be looking for 1933 Goudey..

I am also a fan of the Washington Senators so I collect around the 1924 World Series win...

I collect the 1955 Topps around the theme of the Brooklyn Dodgers finally beating the Yankees in the World Series...

In general, I like to have a story or anecdote about a player before I pick up a card...verus collecting an entire set...

I am working on the Senators mid-20s World Series also. I have not yet selected any pitchers, but the remainder is mostly (but not completely)finished.

I do themes similar to yours and organize them chronologically. E-mail me at identify7@peoplepc.com if you'd like to compare notes and ideas.

Been lurking occasionally here, figured I'd play with this post.

I collect Ira Flagstead who is a great great uncle. Played with Detroit 1917,1919-1923, Boston 1923-1929 and a sip with Washington and Pittsburgh.

In addition to the cards below, I also have model fielding gloves, a side-written bat, various photos and more.

The two cards that are the tops of my wantlist are 1927 York Caramel E210 (have only seen it once) and a 1928 Star Player Candy E-Unc (which I've never seen). Any leads on these would be great!

1919 W514

1922 E220

1921-24 Exhibits

1922 E121 American Caramel

1922 W573

1925 Exhibits

1927 Exhibits

1931 Zeenuts
