Something about it looks funny, and based on its extremely high value, I would send it in for grading before I sunk any money into it.

I would send it to PSA or SGC for authenticating. For insurance value, resale or to simply protect it (If Real). Cool card though is'nt it!

Well it looks good to me from the scan, but that does not say a lot. As most here will say you have to hold it to know for sure. Grading would be your best bet. If it does grade it wil be a very big card fore sure. I hope it works out. Please keep us informed.

the more i look at the card the more the card stock does not seem right. these cards are thinner then regular cards. printed on paper not cardboard stock. additionally, i feel our comments are only helping a potential scammer refine what looks like a very good reprint from the front. you really have to see a card from this set in person to be for sure. legit examples are quite striking

It looks authentic, if its a fake its damn good. The corner crease, corner wear and edge dings all look good. Since its big $$ Id get on a plane and see it in person.

Why? Were you offered the card??? Do you own the card????

The picture were obviously taken from eBay. Their picture hosting watermark is in the lower right corner.

♫ nyah nyah nyah nyah ♫

You can use a photo editing program to remove the ebay "bug" from the corner of the image, BTW.

I suppose the real question is whether someone is going to go into four figures to chase after an ungraded card like this...

Or should I say cards

I'd really like to hear the sellers discription because its obviously on ebay or was recently. That would help a lot. It looks good but it also looks a little fishy. I agree with Leon when he said the back doesn't look right, not light enough.

Any time I see a vintage card, with four perfectly rounded corners, and very little wear to the face of the card itself, I get suspious. What are the odds that a card can go through all that wear and tear, and not suffer at least a tiny bit of face damage? Or wrinkle? Not often. But as stated, a scan does not tell all, and it will have to be submitted for grading. If it is real, nice card. I am a bit leary of it.

Since the cat's already out of the bag, I'm willing to chime in to say that I believe they are authentic. The cards look good to me. Besides, why would a scammer list them in the wrong category, with poor descriptions. Isn't the whole point of a scam to make money? They have other 19th century items, so it looks like the probably got these in a larger deal. They clearly don't know what they have.

A secret??? How many Net54 readers search "old Judge" on ebay every hour of every day? This thread may have pointed a few extra people towards it, but I guarantee you that 99% of the serious nineteenth century baseball card collectors had already seen this or would have even without this thread.

Bet that's one surprised seller. As an aside, it struck me funny that he is selling cards from cigarette packs that come from a "smoke-free environment".

Most N172 collectors usually do the search in the baseball card category. This is in the Tobacco category. The words "Old" and "Judge" are common so they usually narrow it down to baseball cards. I do searches in the tobacco category from time to time but use the word "baseball". I might have seen these but I dont do the search every week. I know there are nonsports, N2, boxing, etc., collectors out there who look more often in the tobacco cards category, they would have seen them.

Once this (these) card hit this board, it doesnt matter where it was listed, they will go for top $$ and go well beyond what they are now. many times more.

I just have to say that I didn't think it was a big deal asking if a card was authentic on this board. Afterall,I see this type of question being asked alot on this site. I did happen to get a few nasty emails from a few fellow collectors out there, didn't appreciate that at all! Thank You Daniel for pointing it out that all of you I am sure constantly search on Ebay for Old Judge, etc type cards.. Like myself!

Well I don't even actively collect Old Judge cards and I do a search of them everyday in my search list and there are less than 200 items that come up in a search for Old Judge in every category. It's nowhere near as overwhelming to look at as some of my searches. I doubt there are very many collectors out there who limit themselves to category searches only.....

Trust me on this - THIS WAS NOT A SECRET TO VERY MANY. The huge jump in price on these coincided with Jay Miller saying they looked good to him. Now if that's not a ringing endorsement of Jay Miller's opinion then I don't know what is.

Ewing $16,534
Gillespie $ 7,720
Corcoran $ 6,231
Keefe $ 2,980

And I win them all!

I like the folding trade with the ad on the back for OJ cabinets for 25 coupons. Neat looking card with great insight into how n173s were aquired.
