Default How much would you pay?

I am actually considering possibly doing this in a few years.

Let's say a mid-grade set of 518 or 520 of T206s were purchased, repackaged in boxes that look like a Piedmont pack and were sold at random one per pack. Say the grade was G to VG. You have an equal chance of getting a Cobb or a McGann...packaging is done with careful scrutiny and thoroughly randomized. Nothing of questionable authenticity...

What would you pay?

It really depends on what the worst condition cards look like.

Maybe the most would be $40. Aprox. 2.5x the lowest valued card for a chance to own a card 5x more than I paid.

You should also add t205 to the packs as well.

This sounds different than the "World's Finest Card Chase" boxes because you aren't just getting 80s and 90s packs as fillers. You at least know what set you would be getting a card from.

This sounds like a great idea. If you were assured that there would be no trimmed/altered cards, and condition would vary between G and V/G I'd say $25.00 to $40.00, or somewhere in the middle.

Sincerely, Clayton

Fun idea...but I wouldn't pay much...as stated...the value of the avg graded common + maybe 5-10% would be what I'd pay.

I am thinking you'd have to pay around $20K for a set of 518 in G-VG...making your cost per card around $40...Marketing and packaging would be another $10-15K. Wouldn't be a cheap proposition...but would be fun. If someone else were to do it, I would roll the dice I think at $100 for one pack... but I'd probably only buy one pack.

Maybe $20-$40 for me...maybe.

There's no way I'd pay $100.

I think I would roll the dice say $50 - $75 for a VG or better if I was guaranteed they weren't altered? For example: if you broke them out of graded slabs and put the slip in with them???

I think it would be helpful to have the cards scanned and posted on a website before packing so anyone would know what they have a chance at. Also, maybe having some method of keeping track of what cards have been found. If for example, the Cobb green portrait has not been found yet and only 20 packs remain, people would probably pay higher for the remaining packs. Cool idea.

Questions,

1) Could you really use name-brand cigarette boxes for this idea? Doesn't the company still own the rights?

2) Isn't this considered a lottery and thus open to state and federal laws governing lotteries?

3) If you can get around questions 1 and 2, why not just buy a set of graded cards and make a vintage-style cigarette box that the slabs will fit into? This way, the cards remained graded and protected and the people buying the boxes KNOW the card hasn't been damaged since it was purchased, cracked out of the slabs and reinserted into the cigarette box. This would also save a lot of time and work, as far as cracking the slabs.

If all the cards were slabbed and guaranteed to be a number (not authentic) I think you could charge quite a bit more for the product because of the added buyer's confidence.

You could use slabbed cards and alter the packaging...but I would guess that would kick your purchase price of a set up to what...maybe $30 or $35 K? So you are probably looking at $45K all in for the project, maybe a tad less and your COST starting to approach $100 per pack...

Would the pack come with cigarettes? No cigarettes would be a deal breaker for me.

You should also include like 10 Signed T206s. Autos are what is making this hobby today. That would be a good add on to the offer

Statistically, you're chances of getting a less common common or HOF'er are pretty good so I would be willing to pay $100 for a pack and the fun of it. Here's the issue I have - How do you handle knowing what's left as they are sold? This could raise or lower the pack value because if you're down to 10 packs and there's still a green Cobb then I'm buying the last 10 packs for $1000. You know buyers will be posting their significant wins on this forum and the more HOFers pulled from packs, the less desirable your remaining packs become.

Possibly presell your packs and ship on the same date?

Just put some 1/1's of some common autographs in there, glued to shiny cardboard...............and you can charge just about anything you want for them.

my two cents (barely)...

to avoid people revealing what they got inside their packs prior to all being sold (thus overvaluing or devaluing remaining packs), you could hold off sending ANY of the packs until ALL are sold. maybe some sort of trusted clearinghouse could hold the packs until all have been paid for? then you could send all out at once.

just a thought...

I would pay $100. And I also wanted to add a +1 to the suggestion that you scan ALL the cards and put them on a website for viewing prior to sale, and also that you leave the cards in the holders for protection/etc.

This is a sweet idea. As a CJ guy, if you did the same thing and guaranteed all cards a numerical grade with most cards falling in the fr-vg category somewhere, the pack, or box in scenario, would run you aroun $150 to break even...I dont think I could drop 175-200 on a box, but maybe I would in the end if I had some wine or a long island in me!

I am finding the financial prospects dubious, through I don't think we are the guys for high risk packs but after some though, here is how i think I would do it (theoretically speaking). 1) Buy a solid G-VG set 2) cut a deal with one of the grading companies to both grade the set and custom header it (much like Nelson's Plank which describes it as part of the Carter Collection). 3) Scan every card and put it on a website. 4) Presell the entire set...not one pack goes out until all 520 are sold. Allow people to log on to the website and "claim" the card they got. They could even upload a picture of themselves with it...Depending on what happened, if someone kept a few packs, they could actually increase in demand on the secondary market. I am not sure that the numbers would ultimately work, though.

Not a bad idea, what is stopping someone from claiming a Ty Cobb, when they got a Snodgrass?

I would enclose a card with a code on it that you could input into the website to see what card you won.
