Default 2004 National moved to Cleveland

Posted By: Marc S.

Just for clarification as many were still quoting Anaheim for 2004

The annual meeting of the National Convention Committee resulted in the 2004 event being moved from Anaheim to Cleveland.

NSCC President Etta Hersh opened the meeting by noting that the Executive Board had been getting a number of calls expressing concern with Anaheim, and so a decision had been made to let voters have the option of moving the show back to Cleveland, which hosted the 1997 and 2001 events.

After some occasionally heated debate, the voters opted for Cleveland in 2004 and then approved a slate that will send the National to Chicago in 2005, Atlantic City in 2006 (also the host site of next year’s National), back to Cleveland in 2007 and Chicago again in 2008. A full report on the National will appear in the Sept. 6 issue of SCD.

is the National being relegated to just a few now? Or is it just that no one from any other city want to take on the burden of hosting the National?

No National west of the Rockies???? No National south of the Mason-Dixon line??? Are That's like 2/3 of the country. I thought the whole idea of a National was to BE national in reach. Of course a vote at the National in Chicago will produce a north-east skew in the results; southerners and westerners often cannot attend shows so far from home. This totally sucks.

I don't think the South will ever have another National, unless Leon is able to bring it to Texas.
Dallas would be an excellent choice, it's centrally located, with great restaurants, plenty of hotels and a great ballpark. It also has one of the largest airports which is easily accessable from anywhere in the country.
While I hate to admit it, the Nationals in the Northeast & Midwest always seem to draw bigger crowds, and are therefore safer bets than the South or the West. Big D may be our last chance.
be well Brian
PS I wouldn't be to upset to go to Chicago every other year, especially if the cubbies are in town.

Don't forget that Dallas is the home of Beckett, which couldn't hurt (unless they aren't a sponsor)

Some of us in the South don't really consider Dallas "the South." I can understand the problems with having the National in a city like New Orleans or Miami, but what about Atlanta? It's a good baseball city and should have the sufficient hotel space, restaraunt capacity, etc.

It was good enough for an Olympiad, so why not the National?

Hi Chris
I agree Dallas isn't really the South, but Atlanta has hosted the National before and it didn't go very well. I think New Orleans is a great host city for events, but I'm not sure it has the collector base to insure a big enough turnout. Maybe a positive showing in Dallas would help HotLanta get another shot.

Some of us don't consider Texas "the South."
Hey if you really want to make a Southerner happy, move the National to New Orleans (pronounced Nah' lins). To heck with Texas or Atlanta...

and having lived in New Orleans, other pronunciations are,N'awlins, Nawleens and, N'olans with other names as well such as Crescent City,The Big Easy and,VooDooLand. New Orleans is a great place for any event and certainly attracts Folks from everywhwere.Living now, Only an hour from Orlando FL,another great place for an event, families could come. There is much for the family to enjoy while we enjoy the event. Orlando would be a perfect site for the National. Not to mention the closeness of the Ted Williams Museum.

Anaheim draws great crowds and has something for the spouse and kids to do too. Plus, we don't really know what the last five Nationals have drawn since the National refuses to release attendance figures; all numbers thrown around are based on press estimates not sales counts.
