Default T-206 Southern League Players, Were These Cards of Minor League Players

Posted By: peter chao

I'm not even sure whether the Southern League was considered a minor league back in 1909. My question is whether there were any minor league cards before those included with the T-206?

Peter, the Southern League cards were minor league cards...and yes there are older minor league cards. The N172 Old Judge set is filled with minor league cards.

I never said I was an expert on prewar cards, that is why I posed the question. Your expertise would be appreciated.

Or do you just like to ask questions, just to be noticed?

Do you own, or have you read any of the referrence books that have been discussed on this forum?

Picking brains is nice, but I think that you might find digging for the information more enjoyable. ... then again, in your case, I may be wrong.

I would like nothing better than to spend my entire day reading baseball books but unfortunately I am unable to. It is a perfectly innocent question. I wish I had the time to question the motives of Net54 members.

Peter C.

Edited to add: Actually, the question is not as basic as it looks at first glance. Generally, it is known that Branch Rickey was a pioneer in the use of the farm system as we know it. Did the Southern League have any formal ties with major league teams similiar to what Branch Rickey created?

That's Broderick Crawford's line from an old movie called, "BORN YESTERDAY".

During those years you couldn't use the word "bull sh!t."
So he said to a very young Bill Holden, "Never crap a crapper".

You spend more TIME on this forum than Jeff does.
So what's all this crap about you not having enough TIME to read? .... You're an attorney?

I was joking about being an expert on baseball law, I'm not. It's also unfortunate that many of the references you mentioned are not in general circulation. Also, this may be difficult for you to believe, but not everybody lives and breathes the hobby 24 hours a day.

Now that you know that Old Judges included minor leaguers, how would you go about identifying them if you were given a pile of OJ cards, Peter?

If you do not know the answer to this inquiry, you could ask, or you could read Lipsett's Encyclopedia, or other lesser resources.

But I bet that you know the answer.

Gil,

If I saw a pile of OJs, first I would start salvitating. But to be realistic I would probably only be interested in the cards of players I know something about. It would be unlikely that I would pick any minor leaguers out of the group.

I know that Lipsett's Encyclopedia is considered a good reference, but it's been out of print for a long time and I do not have one on my shelf.

If I got seriously into any set I normally refer to my Standard Catalog.

Huh, is Peter Chao a bad guy now when did Jeff (Lichtman) I assume join this list? Am I on the list yet? Because if not, I want to be!

I ask because I cant keep track of these things. LOL

I really don’t think Pete’s question was that bad, hell I’ve seen worse on here.

Keep me posted on the question above would love to know what side to pile on, never get enough of these good old hobby expert "Johnson" swinging contests.

I may regret this but cut the guy a little slack….come on Joe I know you’re a big softie down inside.

**edited to add my "Johnson"**

John,

Your posts and scans are too interesting you could never make the list. And Jeff Lichtman would die if he thought he was on the same list as me.

That’s ok Pete; just remember it’s not the size of your “Johnson” but how you use it!

As for me being on the list or not just give me time…LOL

to answer petes ?. no minor league team had any connection with a major league team till branch rickey innovated the system w/stl cards. they operated independently and sold better players to the majors.(to the highest bidder) at first it was thought that rickeys "farm" system would ruin the minor leagues but as we now know it helped them survive. soon after rickey innovated the farm system all the major league teams followed suit.

To add to the Rickey thread..I think at one point the Cardinals controlled over 30 minor league teams during his time. Soon the teams like the Yankees joined the fray.

Is this true?
"to answer petes ?. no minor league team had any connection with a major league team till branch rickey innovated the system w/stl cards".

I am under the impression that the Brown's owner, Chris von der Ahe, also owned the Whites (a minor league affiliate). And he moved players from the Whites to the Browns during the 1880s. Several of these Whites players appear in the Old Judge set.
