Default 2011 National?

Has there been a determination as to the location of the 2011 National as of this date? I am planning to make my first trip next year. Thanks!

It is in Chicago I believe. Well, Rosemont to be exact; It is at the Donald E Stephens Convention Center. I live about half an hour north- you can expect me to be there!

Since this year's show will be a coastal show and keeping in mind it was at Cleveland last year. My guess is that Chicago may be the location for 2011.

Default While no perfect place for the National

Because someone will be upset. In reality; Chicago (Rosemont) *IS* the best place for the National now and in the future.

I second that motion - only a 3 hour drive up I-35 for me.

All in favor?

My guess is that 2014 will wind up on the West Coast somewhere, maybe Anaheim again.......

Back in August, there was a thread on suggestions for improving The National.

http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=114661

Mike Berkus was kind enough to come on and give some of the thoughts and logic behind their planning. If you don't have time to review the whole thread, he made some key points in posts #79 and #115.

The first factor they have to consider is available floor space at a convention center. They shoot for a minimum of 300,000 sq. ft. Baltimore will be the tightest ever with 290,000 sq. ft. I think Cleveland has over 500,000 sq. ft. available.

Very few cities offer this much space on one floor, in one location.

After that, you get into things like set up costs (This eliminates NYC.) Then you look at hotel rooms available, transportation, etc.

This thread explains why many cities aren't even considered.

From Mike's post (#79):

So, we have Balt 2010, Chicago 2011, Cleveland 2012, Chicago 2013, 2014 is open, 2015 is Chicago. We are looking at Atlantic City, Las Vegas, I will try Anaheim again, Dallas, St. Louis, and Boston.

Getting the Nets is like having a rendering plant built in your neighborhood...anybody else want to take the Nets off our hands?

I just read the entire old thread that Jim posted a link to,and was glad to see that some people were suggesting Las Vegas.
Yes,I would LOVE IT to come to Vegas, because I live here.
But there are all kinds of reasons to have it here-we actually have 2 convention centers .We also have everything else a traveler could want-great luxury hotel rooms at fair prices, huge buffets (for all of you eaters ),entertainment, music, clubs, sports books, easy transportation, and yes, even gambling.
I do plan on making it to a National, even if it never comes to Vegas, but I sure would love it to come here.It would be nice to meet some of you folks for dinner also.
We also have some of the finest Steakhouses .We have it all here, when it comes to entertainment-and PLENTY of convention center space.
It seemed like it was being considered, but that was it............
I'm sure our Mayor would love to see it come to town (and so would I ).
Sincerely,Clayton

They're only spending a few hundred million dollars per win they accumulated this year on the new arena. But my guy T-Will is on the team, so I have to check them out.

It sure is great to live near Chicago. I don't get to too many card shows, but I like to hit the Sun Times show at least once a year, and it's great having the National come back so frequently. Vegas would be fun though...might give me a reason to finally get out there.

Hey Barry,

St. Louis is deternined to keep the Rams, so we would probably love to have their basketball equivalent!

i heard the last one at anaheim was horrible, don't think we'll be seeing it out here anymore. a west coast national just doesn't make any sense from a logistics pov. my guess is instead of vegas they can just do AC. let's stop kidding ourselves and calling it the national, it's more regional than ever before.

I would love to have one on the West Coast. With 7 kids, I would have to sell my collection just to pay for the airfare and motel.

So leave them home; I consider the National my vacation, not the family's.

And Vegas would be awesome!

KC boast several convention centers capable of this. We have the Staples center, convention center, and we are wasting more money for a new arena for what ever else. There are alot of hotels and transportation options. Food and entertainment is within walking distance for most. The laid back atmosphere is great also. Who gives a crap about STL. I grew up there and they don't hold a candle to KC when it comes to these things.

Who do I send my opinions to????

Andrew,

You got my vote. There are a couple places on the Kansas Side that are large enough for this as well. The Overland Park Convention Center comes to mind - and not just because it's 20 minutes away from where I live either!

I love KC...Every Summer I take the family down there for a baseball game, Worlds of Fun, Oceans of Fun, and the T-Rex cafe. They have a nice zoo, but the area surrounding the zoo is not so nice...they also have the Negro League Museum...and they were building a new waterpark by the Nascar track on the KC side the last time I was down there. It'll probably be open this Summer.

I think Louisville, Kentucky would be a great place to hold the National. An abundance of convention space, plenty of hotels, some great restaurants, Louisville Slugger Museum, Churchill Downs, a near by casino and plenty of other things to do. Louisville is pretty centrally located and is easily accessible with three major interstates that run though it.

Plus parking would only cost around $6.

Even though it is a 6 hour drive, I really like the National in Cleveland personally, but I think the organizers should be holding the National in additional different cities than what they are currently doing. I know this year will be in Baltimore, but then it seems to rotate between Chicago and Cleveland. Why not try other cities that have been mentioned in the past ?

During the late 1970s and early 80s, larger sports collectors conventions included seminars and discussion panels but the hobby eventually drifted into the mammoth show/autograph pavilion model. With the advance of the internet, less business than ever takes place in person and fewer discussions occur between dealers and collectors who share the same passion. I'd like to see more of these type seminars & discussions during the National weekend, either during show hours or after show hours rather than a separate "Premier Collectible Conference and Exhibition (PCCE)" show that was unsuccessfully held in April of 2008 in Chicago.
