Default MISSION ACCOMPLISHED (I think)....American Beauty 460 set

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

There are 103 possible T206's that could have been printed with the American Beauty 460 back. But,
there are always those "nasty" No-Prints that keep you guessing. After 4 years of hunting for AB 460
cards, it appears that 33 Subjects are No-Prints. This of course is subject to revision, if additional AB
460's are found.

So, it's taken me 4 years to acquire 70 cards. It took me only 11 months to put together a 521 card
T206 Piedmont set. So, that gives you an idea how tough these AB 460 cards are.

Since the AB 460 back has a Factory 42 (North Carolina) identification, we can presume these cards
were issued at the very end of the T206 production run (circa 1911). So, I thought it would be cool
to collect this final T206 issue.

Listed here are the 70 cards in my set. The 350/460 Series is first and the 460-only Series follows.....

350/460 Series......30 cards

Ames (hands above head)
Baker
Berger
Bradley (bat)
Burch (fielding)
Cobb (bat off)
Conroy (bat)
Crawford (bat)
Elberfeld (Washington-fielding)
Jennings (one hand)
Jennings (two habds)
Jordan (bat)
Lajoie (bat)
Lake (no ball)
Leach (cap)
Leifield (bat)
Manning (pitching)
McQuillan (bat)
Mullin (bat)
Overall (yellow sky)
Pelty (vertical)
Pfeister (throwing)
Snodgrass (catching)
Steinfeldt (bat)
Tinker (bat off)
Wagner (bat on right)
Willetts
Willis (bat)
Wilhelm (bat)
Wiltse (throwing)

460-only Series......40 cards

Abbaticcio (blue sleeves)
Ball (Cleveland)
Bergen (catching)
Bridwell (cap)
Camnitz (arms at side)
Camnitz (arms up)
Chance (bat)
Chase (Trophy)
Crandall (cap)
Devore
Doyle (portrait)
Duffy
Ford
Frill
Gandil
Geyer
Howell (hands at waist)
Hummell
Lake (with ball)
Latham
Marquard (follow thru)
McGraw (glove at hip)
Meyers
Needham
Oldring (bat)
Overall (blue sky)
Payne
Pfeffer
Schaefer (Washington)
Schulte (back view)
Schlei (bat)
Seymour (portrait)
Sheckard (glove)
F. Smith (Chicago & Boston)
H. Smith (Brooklyn)
Stovall (bat)
Tannehill (Chicago)
Tinker (bat on)
Wheat
Wiltse (portrait w/cap)

I'd very much appreciate any additions to this sub-set....as I said, I am not 100% certain that these
70 cards complete this run. Actually, I would have expected more of them from the 460-only Series.

So, once more I'm asking you T206 collectors to check-out you sets and see if you have any AB 460
cards that are not on my list ?

Thanks,

TED Z

Ted, are you putting together a master T206 set or have you been selling/trading off your completed subsets?

For what it's worth, I have never seen a Doolan Batting or Magee Batting American Beauty 460 in the last 7-8 years, so I do not believe either of those two exist [despite being feasible]

Posted By: Pennsylvania Ted

I'm not really intending to do a "master" set of T206's. I am too old for such a project. I should've
started a master set back in the 1970's.
Just trying to complete T-brand sub-sets that appeal to me....like Piedmont, Sovereign, American
Beauty 460, Sweet Cap 150 Fac. 649 ovpt., and who knows what is next.

These, I intend to hold onto, and eventually give them to my Grandson, Ron.

If you recall, I recently put together a Sweet Caporal, Fac. 30 set of 467 cards. This one I've al-
ready broken up for selling/or trading purposes.

Thanks for asking,

TED Z

Hello Ted,
Congratulations on the large collection/set of T206 with American Beauty 460 backs.
I have 16 of these and all are listed on your checklist.

Also - I have never seen a T206 O'Leary, hands on knees, with American beauty back (350 or 460). Do you have a scan?

Thanks,
Art M.

Hi Ted,

Congrats on your accomplishment. No small task. I have one question though. You stated above that there are 103 AB-460 subjects while Bill in his "Super Set" thread mentions that there a 109 AB-460 subjects. Could this be due to variations or am I just missing something?

Thanks in advance for your response,

Jantz

The edit is because for some reason everytime I post tonight half of my post get erased. Hmmm

Great question, guy.....here is my answer.....Bill's Super-Set includes the 6 cards that Scot Reader has
quite brilliantly identified as the "super-prints" (S-P). When Bill created his excellent spread sheet 4 years
ago, my following explanation was unknown.

My observation, after many years of collecting T206's, is that these six S-P cards were not printed with
AB 460 backs. And, this observation is consistent with the fact that these 6 cards exist with the AB 350
with frame. This AB frame back was printed only on the cards in the 350 Series. Now, this may seem con-
tradictory, but look at it in this light....American Lithographic Co. (ALC) initially issued these six S-P cards
in the 350 Series. Subsequently, ALC decided to extend these six cards in to the 460 Series......perhaps,
due to the popularity of these players.

For new members of Net54 that are interested in collecting T206's and are not familiar with the term
"Super-Prints". Most T206's are normally found with 4 to 12 various backs. The 6 super-prints can be
found with at least 20 various backs. And, the Red Cobb is found with as many as 25 various backs.

Another aspect, that differentiates these 6 cards from the other cards in the 350/460 Series, is that
their American Beauty 350 back features the FRAME design. The other 350/460 cards were printed
with the American Beauty 350 No Frame back.

Shown here is a scan of the super-prints.......

way to go, Ted...that's quite an accomplishment. AB's are definitely one of the coolest backs in t206...next to Coupon that is! It's just a matter of time before it's recognized w/t206!

Congrats, Ted! Is there anyway that you or someone else here can provide a list of how many cards it takes to complete each back subset? Ex. How many for Brown Hindu? Piedmont 150? Polar Bear? etc....

1st..do you have access to Bill Brown's T206 Super-Set ?

This spread sheet format can provide you with a lot of the information you are asking about.

2nd.. on Net54 we have conducted numerous surveys on the various T-brands of the T206 set.

Use the "SEARCH POSTS" feature and with a some patience you can access surveys on Piedmont,
Sweet Cap (Factory 30), Sovereign, El Principe de Gales, Old Mill, Tolstoi, American Beauty 460,
Cycle 460, Broad Leaf 350 & 460, Drum, Red Hindu, Uzit brands. These surveys will provide you
with confirmed listings of their respective T206 backs.

Thanks, Ted. I do have enough info to figure it including the incredible spreadsheet which logs each player's own back possibilities. Before I started researching through the posts, or even counting up the back combos on my spreadsheet, I guess I was hoping someone already had a count available, so I didn't have to to work too hard! happy.gif Yeah....lazy.....I know!

No big deal, if not. Thanks!
