The scan of this uncut 1934 GOUDEY (34G) sheet is of a photo I snapped of it back in 1981. Good ole long time collector/dealer and close friend, Bill Bossert,
invited me to his BB card shop in Swarthmore, PA. Bill and I were avid uncut sheet collectors, and he wanted me to check-out this 34G sheet that Rob Lifson loaned to him for Bill's article in Krause's Spring issue of the Baseball Card Magazine. This 25-card sheet was reasonably priced in 1981. I was tempted to acquire it. However, my daughter Debbie had just started College. And her tuition costs were a higher priority to me at that time than my owning a 47-year old piece of cardboard. TED Z |

Not exactly sure. They are factory cut tabs (and the ones on the left and right are missing). My guess is that folded into a panel on the back so that it could stand up. But if anyone knows for sure or has another idea please let me know!

Great stuff Ted.....here is an Irelands ad from a large magazine (12 x 9) from the 1920s and 4 boxes from my shelf . I believe they were the predecessor to Curtis Irelands, of E123 fame.

I posted these on the memorabilia side
but since most of what I own is tobacco related including many things that relate in some way to the early card producers - I'm going to sneak these in. Tried to show only the relevent ones. I have more but I'm inclined to stop here as I'm avoiding work of any kind this month which is in itself - work :-).

Your top photo centerpiece appears to be the 12 pages of the 1888 Goodwin Champions (A36) album mounted and framed....or, is it an original 19th Century poster of the A36's pages ? TED Z . |

Regarding your display of the beautiful lithographs in the GOODWIN CHAMPIONS (A36) album......it has me thinking. However, I have mixed feelings about cutting out the 12 pages and mounting them. This album is one of my favorite pieces in my collection. TED Z . Last edited by tedzan; 09-15-2020 at 06:46 PM. Reason: Modified scans. |

Ted
The album was destressed or I wouldn't have taken it apart and framed it. It's intact except the binder strips have been removed. I worked some excess paper from a few surfaces and that's about it. I think it makes for a great display and imagine my framed albums will be some of the last things I let go of. To me they nicely express my "tobacco as art" philosophy....
The albums are more like books and as such are difficult to appreciate as the content is visual not written. They also tend to be expensive and fragile. One can of course take pictures or scans and leave the album on a shelf but then why have the album at all - just get the pictures which one could procure in a few places. A whole 'nother story I suppose. That being said I must confess to owning a fair number of other albums - perhaps not as "desireable" as the different champion albums but no less works of art and they languish in a box unappreciated. I have not an inch of room to hang anything more (a hat and my wife come to mind) and it is of course cost prohibitive to frame them. I do have 2 nicer copies of the Goodwin Champions (one to trade I suppose) and only once before getting this one did I consider using one of them. My view is that these have survived many years and many hands because of their beauty. Like everything we collect we are just temporary keepers - caretakers if you will for a near finite amount of time. I try and keep things in the condition in which I received them and strive to maintain the integrety until they pass to the next person's hands. neat fan Tony
I've owned a few unusual Pirate advertising pieces but never even seen the fan before. Quite nice! Fans make for a great display on a shelf or in a cabinet but one needs to be careful as when displayed OPEN and in part depending on where they sit - the fading and dust accumulation over time unequally affects the front/side/back edges of the ridges. In addition keeping it open can affect the structural integrity of the accordion ridging. I've owned 3/4 such fans (yes I repeated the mistake at least three times) and each time sold them after a few months to a year when I realized display wasn't practical or safe. Of course framing comes with it's own problems and great expense.
I'm sure the next time I have an opportunity to get a tobacco advertising folding fan I'll take the plunge again. Most old advertising is about straight lines and I still chase half moons and circles to break up the structural monotony Last edited by 1880nonsports; 06-13-2015 at 05:19 PM. |

Hi Henry. Thanks for the kudos my friend. I too had not see a Pirates Cigarettes fan until this one as well.
Interesting that you mention to be careful on how to display something such as this due to the delicate nature of the construction. I had plans on framing it along with a Pirates Cigarettes poster which I'd posted in this thread some time back, but doing so would only hurt the structure of the fan itself so for now it sits open at half mast in my display cabinet. Safe and sound! |

This is the bookend piece to Scott's earlier post. The contrast is interesting--Scott's is in pristine condition. This one, as seen, is well loved and handled--with various attachments (Ramly labels) and printing throughout. As seen in the bottom right, no love given to future HOFer Harry Hooper, with his name misspelled as Hopper. In both cases, the clarity of the photo is incredible, not only with the team but the spectators as well.

I figured this is as good of a place as any to ask the board to keep a lookout for the Polar Bear crate I posted above. It was shipped on November 30 from Ohio, and made it the following day to Mount Olive, NJ where it disappeared. UPS has been "searching" for the crate since December 1 (it weighs 65 lbs and was shipped in a custom-made plywood container on a pallet, so I'm not sure how UPS "lost" the item, but apparently they did). Sad to think this piece may be lost forever, but in the off chance anyone happens to see it somewhere, please let me know.

Prior to WWII, the BOWMAN GUM Company marketed their Sports and Non-Sports cards (1938 - 1942) with the Trademark....GUM, Inc.
When Bowman introduced their 1st BB card set after WWII, they continued the "PLAY BALL" Trademark on their wax-pack wrapper. 1948 Bowman 1-cent wrapper TED Z . Last edited by tedzan; 08-26-2020 at 07:07 PM. Reason: Corrected typo. |
