Default Pack of Churchman's Cigarettes - Did It Contain a Card?

Posted By: Ben

I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not this pack of Churchman's contained a card at one time? What year is the pack from? Does anyone know the value? It's pretty cool that there are still three original cigarettes with it!

Default Pack of Churchman's Cigarettes - Did It Contain a Card?

Posted By: leon

I will take a stab and give a semi educated guess. When I spoke to a friend (Jon C) recently about the Pirate pack I had (since traded) with a card in it he told me that English cigarettes didn't come with tax stamps. IF they didn't, and I have no reason not to believe they didn't have them, then we only need to date the pack to when cards were produced. If that is done then I would think there would be at least a possibility this housed a card. Here are some of the sets that were made and I took them from a "for sale" site, The order below is: the year, number in set and lira/dollar value. I would date this pack to around the 10's-30's..(by other slide shell packs I have seen and the general look) though I could be off on that a little bit. I would guesstimate the pack at about $35-$80 value, only by my gut feel....

Default Pack of Churchman's Cigarettes - Did It Contain a Card?

Posted By: Jon Canfield

Leon - I think everything you said is 100% accurate but I o want to clarify one thing which was probably my mistake when we spoke. With regards to the early Pirate packs (for example, those produced between lets say 1909 and 1915), there were not tax stamps adhered to them. That being said, I am unfamiliar as to if and when Great Britain may have started placing tax stamps on packs. I have seen many Pirates from the 1920's, 30's, etc and NONE seem to have them. I have also seen countless other British brands without tax stamps. However, a tax stamp, is, after all, just proof that a produced paid whatever revenue tax the government imposed on it. The US used a fairly simple system beginning in the 1870s. Great Britain did not seem to follow suit. I would imagine, however, that at some point, Great Britain must have employed tax stamps (although I'm not sure when) or if not, had some other way of taxing tobacco.
