Default 1831 Famous Early Baseball Samuel Wood Woodcut

Posted By: jason

1831 Very Early Baseball Woodcut Chapbook Writing Book

Just listed a very rare & early woodcut on eBay depicting what is considered one of the 1st true baseball images published in the Children's Amusements Chapbook published by Samuel Wood & Co. There is an earlier image in the Little Pretty Pocket Book but that looks very much less like the game we know today.

It would be an excellent addition to any early baseball book/image collection but can be secured without the many thousands of dollars needed for the Amusements book. After all, you are mainly paying for the woodcut and this publication represents excellent value by comparison. It is whole & complete which is very rare for such an early book intended for use by a child.

This image is less common & prolific used than the slightly later Baseball On Boston Common woodcut by Carver.

I also have about 30 other very early American Baseball/Trap Ball/Hand Ball/Cricket chapbooks from 1801 - 1850 that I am willing to part with that are not currently on eBay. If you are interested just drop me a line on earlybball@hotmail.com
