Default T206 Matty Black cap variations

Ben asked about this, so here it is. There are many cards in the t206 set that come in variations too slight to differentiate in a catalog. This is one of those, but it differs enough to give the card two totally different looks:

it almost looks as if matty on the left is looking to the right, while matty on the right is looking skyward...

The card on the right looks to be missing one of the color phases, It looks like light brown is missing, most noticeable in the lip and temple region. Even the blue background sort of looks like it has more brown in it on the card on left. Interesting, I like the eyes, they do look totally different because of registration. Frank

As far as I can tell, this card only suffers from bad registration. Besides the eyes, notice that the card on the right also has nostril holes (is this the scientific term for it, or just plain redundant?) that have worked their way up Matty's nose. To call it a variation doesn't seem accurate. If so, I have a T205 variation of Matty that has so many lines underneath his eyes that it looks like he just woke up in the gutter from an all night binge.

...and it's quite common on this card. It's like they printed it one way and then decided it wasn't quite right. My guess is that they "removed" one layer of dark ink from the plan. In any case, I've seen so many of both variations that I'm certain it's missing ink, not registration. Also, there seem to be slightly more of the lighter cards. Having the luxury of sorting through five of them, I chose one for my collection that had the dark ink, but a light application of it.

Am I getting t206 anal or what?

Scott, any correlation between the missing dark color and the series (350 vs. 460) ?

Elliot - that's an obvious thing I should have checked. I will go back through my scans and see what info it yields.

I don't really have enough data to do this, but here it is, based on the six I've owned. It's a correlation, but not statistical evidence.

dark - 350
dark - unknown (no back scan)
light - 350/460
dark - 350
dark - Old Mill
light 350/460

I see a consistantcy in the "dark" blue and hats on the 350 series I have. I looked at 7 of them with SC backs and they are all darker than the others I have.
