Default Father's Baseball memorabilia

Posted By: Bart Delsing

I am very new to this, but have a special request for locating my dad's memorabilia. My dad is Jim Delsing. he played for the Yanks, Tigers, Senators, Brown's and Hollywood Stars. He's 80 years old and his health is not good. I am interested in any of his baseball history that might be out there. I have most of his cards with the exception of the Signal Hill gasoline and Glendale Meats cards. Can anyone help. Please let me know. Thanks,
Bart Delsing

Generally we don't want too many pleas for things on the main board. However, in this instance, no issue at all. I hope someone can help you. My guess is that someone on the board can....Good luck and let us know how it goes.....best regards

Bart,

You probably already know this, but Jim Delsing was the only player in major league baseball history to pinch run for a midget ...

Also, here's another amusing tid bit from none other than Dan Rather, who in an interview, reflects back on his time as a play-by-play anoouncer for the Houston Buffaloes, a AAA team ...

"I remember the Buffalos were on the road one time, and we were recreating (a game) in the studio, and there was a close play at the plate. I was in that phase where I was trying to use baseball lingo -- I would use wheels instead of legs, like that -- I'm not proud of it, but that's what I did. And so after the center fielder, Jim Delsing, made this terrific throw, I say, "The runner breaks, Delsing takes two steps, he makes a perfect throw, and he's out at the plate." I paused. And then I said, "What a hose on that Delsing." My color man, Frank McGee, fell off the stool laughing. I couldn't continue. I was totally humiliated ..."

By the way, do you have a Red Man tobacco card of him? He made the Red Man set in 1954. There are a few of them on eBay right now ...

I am very familiar with the midget. That's an awesome story. What game was Rather re-creating? I had never heard this before. I can't wait to share this with my sister's and brother. I do have the Red Man Card. Really interested in photos, cards etc. Thanks for sharing the story.
Regards,
Bart

Hi Bart,

I would recommend you pick up the Glendale from Marty's site. As Murcerfan can tell you, this set is not cheap, and examples aren't especially easy to come by. If you wait for a nice one, it could be pretty pricey, and it could be a while. That example is relatively presentable (as these cards go) and a fair price.
Very cool quest, good luck.

Bart -

It would be much cheaper to win the Mastro lot and sell the rest of the cards off than to try to get a card out of murcerfan's collection. I would be interested in the rest of the Mastro lot, contact me if interested.

I was an avid Yankee fan when your Dad join them in 1949. I was only
10 years old at the time and I remember him batting pretty good that
year; although, with likes of Joe DiMaggio, Henrich, Lindell, Bauer and
Mapes in the outfield your Dad didn't get much playing time. I think he
batted .350.

Another thing I remember is your Dad's uniform number....#54, because it
was the highest # on the team and I didn't think the #s went that high.

And, I do recall that in the spring of '50 your Dad was traded to the
St Louis Browns along with other players. I remember this quite well,
since one of those players traded with your Dad was one of my favorites,
George "Snuffy" Stirnweiss. Let me tell you, I was one upset 11-year old.
I didn't understand this; and, in your Dad's case he started off hitting at
a clip of .400 (in about a dozen games). And, a Left-Handed hitter at that
in Yankee Stadium. So, after all these years can you tell me why they, the
Yankees, did not give him more of a chance ?

We heard about the passing of your dad and we hope that some of the board memebers were able to lead you to getting an item or two of your dad before he passed.
