Default Square Deal Oil Company Card

Posted By: Rhys

Has anyone ever seen this card before? There is no doubt it is vintage and aside from the fact that GAI stupidly placed one of their stickers right onto the card front, it is really nice. In 20 years of collecting I have never seen this card before and cant find it cataloged anywhere.

Thank in advance

Rhys

Neat card. What are the dimensions and cardstock like? Nice sticker too...

Rhys, is that decal actually ON the card?

It's a really cool card, by the way. Jersey boy, Joe Medwick was.

The card is thick stock and has sort of a matte (spelling?) finish to it. There is no doubt it dates to the mid 1930's. The exact measurements are 4.5 X 7 inches, just a hair larger than the wide pens and fine pens of the 1930's. Back is blank and YES the sticker is right on the card. They couldn't have put it on the back at least? Not only that but I doubt the sticker is going anywhere since they are made to be tamperproof. At least nobody will ever wonder if the signature is real.

The paper stock sort of looks like these ca.1929 premiums...

MAYBE GIZMO CAN COME ON HERE AND EXPLAIN WHY GAI STUCK A TAMPERPROOF STICKER ONTO THE PHOTO ITSELF.

I've not seen one of those. Good card.

Unbelievable that they put that sticker on the card. To me that sticker lowers the value of the card...

And while I think the signature is authentic, I don't base that on a sticker. I don't think that sticker prevents folks from thinking the autograph might not be authentic.

If the sticker folks are so smart as to ascertain autograph authenticity, then surely they'd be smart enough to not put the sticker on the card.

Rhys,

That is one of the most offensive things I've heard of a grading company doing. You should find a professional conservator (of your choice) and make GAI pay to have that sticker removed.

I'd say I was stunned if it wasn't so unstunning to see this kind of crap these days. Very sad.

I'm sure they could have it back to you by Monday.

Are you sure GAI put this sticker on the card? It's so over the top it's hard to believe....

Wow. That sticker is like nailing a bright modern billboard onto Lincoln's forehead on Mt. Rushmore. Jangling, jarring, discordant, possibly permanent, offensive and a bad idea in so so many ways. Wow.

And Wesley, HAHAHAHAHAAH. Great one. lolol. I'm glad you and Leon don't forget about that nut and keep his memory alive here.

It is absolutely on there, no joke. I even tried to lightly peel it when I got it and the extreme corner crumbled on the sticker and I could tell it was going to peel the paper so I stopped. I could have understood if the sticker was on the back, but right there on the front? At least it is a cool baseball card that I have never seen before.

I do admire their precision placement of the sticker. About 50 angstrom units (I also like my temperatures in Kelvin) shy of the signature.

A few months ago Rhys and I worked out a deal for this card and I am just getting around to adding it to my site. Can someone post, or email me, the company (he's been on our board before) that gets crap off of cards? I never did much care for the sticker. I might as well see if they can perform magic.... It's a perfect "type" card otherwise....best regards

I wonder if Kevin Saucier can remove it? I'll bet he at least knows someone who can.

100 years from now, someone will look at that sticker and go, what the hey, who is this Global? Like everyone else, it is hard to fathom putting the sticker right on this awesome card. Thanks for posting.

This is abject stupidity on GAI's part. They did the same thing with a signed Phil Esposito (!) book I have, helpfully certifying his signature, and ruining the book as a collectible. It's really unfathomable as to how they think this is helpful.

i wonder who the idiot was that came to the decision that the sticker will be applied directly to the collectible, kind of like laminating a card so it retains its value.maybe, global should pay to have their stickers removed.

Thanks for posting that one. I had never seen another before.....nice sticker too. A kind forum member emailed me the website of who takes things off of cards. I have met Mike Baker before and he seems like a nice guy. I have heard great things about him too, as far as grading goes. Unfortunately HE is the one that signed the little COA for this item (I have it). I really think he should know better....again, I like Mike......but not the sticker....best regards

Be patient with the stickered item. In a hundred years it will be looked upon as a fascination similar to your "Old Put" or some other stamping on a vintage issue.
