Default T211 South Atlantic League question

Hi all. I was scanning and digitally tagging some of my cards today, and I came across my T211 Red Sun Rufus Nolley, listed with Montgomery. When looking him up on Baseball Reference, I noticed that he did not play for Montgomery, he played for several teams, but not Montgomery. In 1910, he was with the Savannah Indians. Does anyone know of any other T210/211 players that are listed on the wrong team? When I add my cards digitally, I like to include the first name. If I search, for instance, "Nolley, Montgomery" Baseball Reference won't come up with him, because he didn't play for them. Just curious if he is an anomaly or if this happened often. Thanks,

Ed

Montgomery was in the Southern Association in 1910 and did not have a Nolley on their roster. It could very well have just been human error to show him with Montgomery.

There were many teams back in those days that either re-located mid-season or just disbanded altogether, but I found no record of either of those things happening in 1910 with those two leagues. So, I will fall back on my first theory...poor attention to detail.

I'm always looking for Columbus players from the T210 set if you see any.

I hope this helped.

Clyde,

Thanks for the reply. Like I said Nolley played for Savannah in 1910. What I am looking to find, are there a lot of other players from the T210/211 sets that had the wrong team listed on their card? Since I first posted, I have also found that Sweeney, Atlanta and Kane, Birmingham are also wrong team names. Has anyone ever made a list of which players in the T210/211 sets have the wrong team names listed?

Thanks,
Ed

Default Rufus Nolley

According to the May 28, 1910 edition of Sporting Life, p. 21:

"Montgomery, Ala., May 18.-Editor "Sporting Life."-In accordance with the League rule, the local club is now down to the player limit. Rufus Nolley drew the pink slip owing to lack of condition...".

The November 5, 1910 edition of Sporting Life, p. 15, does not list Nolley in Pitching stats, but does have him in the Fielding stats:

"Nolley, Montgomery 7 (games) 5 (putouts) 27 (attempts) 5 (errors) .857 (pct.)"

Undoubtedly Nolley pitched in 7 games for Montgomery before being released, then picked up by Savannah of the South Atlantic League, as the November 26, 1910 edition of Sporting Life, p. 10 lists him in both Fielding and Pitching stats:

"Nolley, Savannah 24 (games) 9 (putouts) 66 (attempts) 9 (errors) .893 (pct.)" and

"Nolley, Savannah 24 (games) 19 (wins) 3 (losses) 0 (ties) .864 (pct.)"

I suppose Rufus worked himself back into shape...

Default Sweeney & Kane

Sporting Life, May 7, 1910, p. 22, "Atlanta has disposed of Hugh Sweeney to Savannah".

Sporting Life, June 25, 1910, p. 21, "Birmingham has sold Paddy Kane, catcher of last season's team, to the Altoona (Tri-State League) Club".

Nolley, Sweeney, and Kane were all on the roster of Southern Association teams at the beginning of the season, then traded, disposed of (!), or given the pink slip at some point. That may explain why the teams are different than shown on baseball-reference. Records are not always easy to substantiate and are left off for that reason, I believe...

Baseball-reference is often significantly inaccurate when it comes to pre wwi minor league baseball. It is a powerful research tool for those early teams but should never be used as gospel to determine if a player played for a particular team in a particular year. This is especially true when a player played only part of the season or shares a last name with someone else. It is both invaluable and riddled with errors.

You guys are awesome. So, where do you find the old copies of Sporting Life? What other databases can you find doing an internet search? I would love to be able to find this type f information out without having to pose a question on the forum, otherwise known as bugging you guys to answer something that I could easily (is that the right phrase?) answer myself. Believe me, I look, I just don't find. However, shortly after I pose a question here, you guys have it. What am I doing wrong?

Tell me more about this "membership". Does it involve microchips inserted directly to the brain? Seriously, I have been collecting about 8 months now, membership in what?
