Default Show Some OJ Subsets

Recently upgraded a few of the Brown's Champions. Would love to see how others collect the set that definitely is not for set collectors.

Default Duets

Leon - that's a beauty, but don't you need the Willie Hahm for the full subset? (I have seen a picture of one in book once...closest I will get).

A related, very small, subset:

Default Moose Farrell

John A. "Jack" Farrell. "Moose". Second baseman with the Washington Nationals in 1886-1887. 877 hits and 23 home runs in 11 MLB seasons. He debuted with the Syracuse Stars in 1879. His best season was 1883 with the Providence Grays as he posted a .329 OBP with 92 runs scored in 435 plate appearances. He was the second baseman for the Providence Gray's in 1879-1885, a consistently good team that won the pennant in 1879 and 1884. He last played for the Baltimore Orioles in 1888-1889. In 1881, he managed the Providence Grays.

I have 5 of the Farrell, Washington poses and an image that appears to have been made from the same plate as a sixth pose:

Nice cards, all. I collect by player. I also collect OJ subjects that once played for New Orleans or Houston. Here's a Gillespie run I did a few years ago. Also, here's a Hess Curt Welch that I got last year, so I'm collecting Welch cards now, along with many other subjects.

That's a nice run of standing bats.

Here's a Billy Crowell pose 2 with St Joes.

Crowell played for New Orleans in 1892 and Houston in 1899, so that's why I collect his cards. See 1892 New Orleans Team Photo with Crowell.

I still need pose 1 Clev and St. Joes, pose 4 St. Joes, and pose 5 Cleve

This card, the pose 2 St Joes, was listed on eBay by iconsportscards. I looked at my notes and it was not on my wantlist. I checked my cards and did not have it. I looked in the OJ guide and it's not on there. This may have already been noticed, but I wanted to point out that all 5 Crowell cards come as St Joes or Clev. The OJ guide is great, and I would not know what cards to look for without it.

I am always willing to follow a motherload of great cards. Here is my Ezra Sutton run. It has been a top collecting priority for a very long time. To give you a closer idea about how long I have been working on it, I believe the Old Judge shown cost me $13.00, plus a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE... acronyms existed back then as well).

Any difference between cards is a variation. In my mind a variation like this is more significant than a team spelling variation (Omaha vs Omahas) but less significant than an actual team change (Detroit to Boston) and certainly less significant than a pose change. If I was doing a player run in the set I would try to get all variations, no matter how minor.

Cool. They are both 1887, I don't have Jay's book in front of me right now, but if I remember correctly yours is an 0 number type B (script), mine is an 0 number type A. I don't know of the logo placement difference is due to the subtype or different runs of the same type (in other words is there a Type A with the other logo placement or not)

I appreciate Keith (Alywa) showing some of his gorgeous subsets!

It's interesting that the few big 19th Century collectors that I know tend to be very private and only "show off" cards they are looking to sell.

Outside of a book that was written 15 years ago, you rarely see the rarer cards of the era (Cabinets, KBats, GQ's, 4BH ect). It's a shame so many of these cards are hidden away and most hobby enthusiasts will never get to see these beautiful pieces of history.

Maybe it's generational but I love looking through 20th Century collections on Flickr (shout out to Ryan, Sonny, Jeff ect.) and I wish more of the "old timer" 19th century collectors would create similar visual galleries of their collections which would in turn bring more interest and appreciation to what I feel are the coolest cards ever made.

Here's my examples of the 4 greatest pitchers of the 19th Century.

Order is debatable but here's how I rank them:

I’m collecting the Des Moines team. This is the last group photo I took, I’ve added 6 more since then so I’m currently up to 23 cards.

I know there are a couple of Board members with many more poses on hand, but here are the Louisville players I know of. (Don't have a checklist, so feel free to note any omissions). One cheat: Kelly's Umpire Card. Have never seen his Louisville card for sale; and one dupe of Chicken Wolf - because Chicken.
