Mike that Carey is not that bad. The extra paper stuck to the back would probably soak right off.

The Red Cross Byrne discussions caused me to take a closer look at Bobby's career...and also to look at my byrne coupons cards.

It seems byrnes left st louis early in his career...never to return...yet the type 3...supposedly dated 1919 lists him w/st louis. Not to mention he appears to have been long retired by then as well.

I know there are other examples of retired players included as well. Weird!

Peter

He did return to St Louis....owned a Bowling Alley there. It is reported that he once bowled 19 consecutive strikes, including a 300 game.

So, perhaps this earned Bobby a slot on a T213-3 card

Default t213-1 Checklist update/correction

I was digging through my T213-1 collection to show this Jeff Sweeney back run, and I just realized that I do not have a Jeff Sweeney. I have a Bill Sweeney. Unless someone has a scan of a T213-1 Jeff Sweeney, I am assuming the sgc registry list as well as the latest SCD that I have, 2006, is incorrect.

I must amend what I said at the beginning of the thread about Jeff Sweeney appearing in all 3 Coupon sets. My list of subjects is now back down to 20 with all 3 backs.t215-2jsweeneyf.jpg

The 2011 SCD lists Jeff Sweeney as well, but it's Bill. A quick note to SGC and SCD should get the lists corrected.

Here's Bill's Type 2.

Default Lipset Encyclopedia has it correct

Tim, thanks for verifying this. I just looked in Lipset's Encyclopedia and he has Bill Sweeney listed correctly. No Jeff Sweeney.

Can anything be deduced based on the differences in print quality between...say...t213-I's as compared to T213-2's...and the most washed out T213-3...and may as well add the t215-2's into the discussion? I just upgraded the t213-3(both are shown).

Default T213 registration

Peter,

I agree that T213-3 usually has a more faded look than type 1 and 2. Type 2 can be less sharp when in lower grade, but in mid to high grade the type 2 Coupons have sharp registration

I agree! I have/have seen type 2's as vivid as t206...but most type 3's...as well as t216/d303/e106 tend to look fuzzy/washed out?!

Default Peter

My guess is that by 1919, the same printing plates that were used to print T206's approx. 10 years earlier were quite worn out by the time the T213-3
cards were printed.....hence, the "fuzzy/washed out" images.

What's your guess ?

Default Raw materials

The decline of printing quality post WW 1 was partially due to raw materials coming over from Europe, and the many toxic elements contained in Victorian / Edwardian era inks which were being removed from that field.... Ted , much like running our cars ('60 T-Bird and '64 GTO) on 91 octane "premium" gas, when they were designed for 105 octane. Standing still they look the same, i.e. same pose.... But looking closer you see a shell of what was once there...i.e washed out image

Default Plates

I'd like to thank the hobby vets who help new collectors on here everyday. I have a question about the printing process. Scott B. mentioned recently that 150 series cards produce the best registration, because they are the earlier plates.

From this information I would assume that 150 series would command a huge premium in the way that earliest woodcuts command a premium.

Default soaked t213-2 Davis

That card is already rough, so it doesn't matter, but my experience with soaking a t213-2 is that the front faded badly. I will post a scan of the card I soaked.

Yes, it does look like it could be two cards. I will have to take a closer look at it under a magnifying glass. Might be interesting. Thanks.

Default update

I compared it to another type 2 and it is much thicker. After looking at it under a magnifying glass it appears to be two cards stuck together. The card is brittle and pretty delicate so I hate to try to separate the cards. I tried a blow dryer to heat it up just to see if it separated a little bit but it didn't make any difference.

I think I will leave it alone. I'm sure the hidden card is either Ty Cobb or Walter Johnson.

Default grading

I was just checking out the pop reports for the Type 2 Coupons. What a mess. SGC has them listed alphabetically by first name. PSA has some alphabetically by first name, some by last name, and some inserted randomly. Why can't the grading companies provide some decent info? Is is that hard to put them in order by last name?

Thanks for letting me vent!
