At first glance it is a pretty cool Yankees scorecard from a game October 1, 1933.

Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in the lineup.

Adding to the coolness... the game was against the Boston Red Sox.


but....
when I researched that day.... October 1, 1933.... NY Yankees.

It all of a sudden gets way cooler:
" And how many fans know that Ruth didn't entirely desert pitching during his 15 seasons (1920-1934) with the Yankees but made five appearances in all of which he was the winner?

His last showing was the most noteworthy, coming in 1933, the same year in which he added to his legend by hitting the first home run in the first major league All-Star Game at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

On October 1, 1933, with the Yankees out of contention, an aging Ruth, approaching 40, slow, fat and hobbled by aches and pains, agreed to start the last game of the season on the mound against the Boston Red Sox.

It was no masterpiece, Ruth giving up 12 hits and walking three, but he went all the way and hit a home run to provide the margin in a 6-5 Yankees victory before a supportive crowd 20,000, many of whom turned out just to watch him pitch.

"I had such a sore arm I had to eat with my right arm for a week," Ruth said later.

It may not have been Ruth's finest hour, but his last pitching appearance is well worth recalling as displaying his undiminished determination in the face of fading talent.

Ruth's modest final mound triumph and Baylor's singular embarrassment on the basepaths are just two of the achievements and records that warrant a better fate than the total neglect to which so many have been relegated."

Joe- that's a very valuable scorecard. Finding significance in an otherwise mundane game is what most scorecard collectors look for.

I once bought a group of Yankee scorecards from a family that kept them as game souvenirs. Many were from the 1951 season, including two they had from a late season doubleheader. In the first game, Allie Reynolds pitched his second no-hitter of the season. In the second game, Joe DiMaggio hit the final homerun of his career.

Two valuable and significant scorecards!

I had that scorecard for about 15 years or so.

My dad gave it to me (and he got it from an old collector friend).


My dad did not know about the October 1, 1933 game... and quite honestly - I just found out myself (today).


gotta love internet searches.

I have a bunch of scorecards, but I don't have any scanned in yet. My favorite is my Boston Red Sox v Washington Senators from June 23, 1945....it was only by chance that I got this scorecard as I had no idea when I won it on ebay many years ago that it was for a game that was played on the day my father was born. My father was born on an Army base in Nebraska but he spent his first few years in Boston. I still have a lot of family there, but I don't know any of them. I don't think my Grandma liked Boston and she wanted to move back to Nebraska where she was raised.

My friend has a large collection of Babe Ruth negatives and he let me scan all of them a few years ago. One of the negatives was from the last game he pitched against the Red Sox.

Wow Joe. You had it for 15 years and just discovered its significance today. Very Cool!! I didn't know that about that game. Very intersting.

Speaking of finding significance in otherwise mundane material. A couple years ago I picked up this small scrap book filled with newspaper box scores of every single game from 1910 and 1911 and some from 1909. The owner had every game in chronological order. It's a pretty signifcant reference. It was cool lookng through all the lineups and seeing the HOFers. Also cool to see double plays turned by Tinker-Evers-Chance. In the margins the original owner neatly penciled in comments for significant games such as an Addie Joss no hitter and Cy Young's 500th win, to name a few.

I have to admit... if this memorabilia section was not created - I probably would have never stumbled upon the information.

I don't have much memorabilia and when I thought about what I could post... this score card came to mind.

It was always cool enough to me that it included Ruth and Gehrig.
But - I googled the date / game to see if I could find out a little tidbit (like a home run, a final score, or something) to include in a post.

Thats when I happened to stumble upon that article.

Ya post a Yankee scorecard against the Red Sox in which the Sox lost to some bum called Ruth and you expect civil conversation?

nice piece would be great if the item was scored, I have fun collecting Red Sox and Yankees score cards. Sometimes the score cards will have inserts; I have one from 1942 from Yankee Stadium that has a bomb evacuation plan inserted in the middle. This is not a valuable item, just a great piece of history.

Scorecards from 1942-45 are scarcer because of the paper shortage caused by the war so they usually have a slight premium...I've never seen one with a bomb evacuation plan - I'd like to see that.

"Vomitory" is a new word for me so I just looked it up:

A passageway in a Roman amphitheatre that leads from the outside wall to the foot of the banked seats.

There were other definitions relating to vomiting, but I believe this is the definition that best applies. Boy, there has to be a more pleasant word they could have used.

There must be some seats; they most likely would not have been bothered to take most of them off after the war. At this point they would be faded and hard to see anyways. Interesting definition to the word, I would guess the word is not used at all anymore?
