Default Early All-Star Break Trivia:

What pitcher won 18 games before the All-Star break and was not selected that season?

FINALLY...a trivia answer I know.

edited to add...I can't tell you exactly what year it was...other than 72 thru '74. My college roommate was a huge White Sox guy and I remember him ranting about this over and over. He ranted about baseball a lot!

You're correct, Bob. The year was 1973 and Wood lost both ends of a double-header against the Yankees just before the break on July 20 to bring his 'first-half' record to 18-14 in 247.2 innings!- he finished 24-20 in 359.1 innings and 376.2 innings in 1972...back when knuckleballers were men!

Hard to believe there was a time when a team let a get make TWO starts in a day. 372 innings😲❗️

I saw him pitch a few times in Yankee Stadium and in Arlington.

Well, even though I made a point of mentioning it, the double-header loss wasn't really that impressive...as, in this instance, he lost 12-2 in first game...not retiring a single batter and 7-0 in the second lasting only 4.1 innings.

And, while 376.2 innings pitched is very, very impressive, even for a knuckleballer, Mickey Lolich pitched 376.0 'conventional' innings in 1971!
Now, THAT is impressive!

Not many pitchers throw 180 innings now, let alone 220. 370 innings over two seasons more likely!

A different world...could 7-inning games and 5-month, 120-game regular seasons be far away?
