Default question about old judge smr's

Posted By: Dave

just curious if anyone knows on the average what old judge cards have been selling for on ebay, just looked up smr prices through psa, and wondering if they are on the low side or not, a common in a PSA 5 for $325? so a PSA 2 old judge could be had for $100?

Default question about old judge smr's

vintagecarddprices.com contains an exhaustive inventory of OJs and scans and prices realized at auction.

gfg.com also has an exhaustive inventory of OJs and scans and prices for the scanned cards which are available for purchase.

The former is a searchable database with information on many sets and prices. But you have to pay to "join".

The latter is a seller of OJs and other cards.

But in general, the values which you cite are way, way low.

Dave, not that low, if you find them at that price buy them all. I'm sure you will get more answers here.

Default question about old judge smr's

There are so many different factors in OJ valuation/pricing that may influence an advanced collector to spend more on a lesser condition card than a card that is in better condition. If you started a thread and asked collectors of OJs to list, in order, the most important factors (image quality, centering, corners, surface quality, backs) they use in determining the valuation/pricing of an OJ you'll find that the image quality will be at the top of most lists. With that said you can have an OJ in a 6 holder with lousy image quality and that same card in a 4 holder with superior image quality and the card in the 4 holder could possibly sell for more money.

There are so many more factors than that but that is a good starting point. Also, star quality can have a bit to do with it. I wont even start in on the subsets and rarity of some of the cards.

Now if you are going to use the SMR to buy OJs you may be surprised to see that the SMR is well behind the curve on OJs and what some are really worth to different collectors.

thanks for the good info, so which poses are the ones mainly considered more desireable? I've heard the poses of players in actions shots, without a bat, catching a ball, etc.

Although that question is fairly simple to type, it is far less simple to answer. A good starting point for this and related Old Judge information is Lew Lipset's Encyclopedia Volume 1.

The OJ set lends itself to many different collecting approaches. I am only familiar with those which I use, and those whom I know or have typed to employ, or those which we have heard of. Of these, I remember the following techniques to collecting Old Judges.

What Bobby said, and
Collect by year of issuance
Various Leagues such as:
- ex National Assoc players,
- Calif. League,
- Players Lg.
- Minor Leagues
Unusual Players such as:
- switch pitchers
- lefty catchers
- lefty infielders
Unusual Cards, such as
- different colors
- horizontals
- outdoors
- two player
- mascot
- grade
- condition
- non-players
Special Player Accomplishments:
- > 400 Ks/season
- > 40 wins/season
- > 100 errors/season
- HOF
- Those who should be in, but aren’t
Special interest players
- deaf
- ex-Civil War
- race, religion, nationality
Special Interest Teams
- dominant teams
- teams with fewer than 50 games total history
- favorites
