It it's sort of a base set, I think about 660 is about right...that way you can have about 20 players pet team...I will always like the mid 70s Topps set sizes and composition.

I would say at least 350 cards that gives you ideally the starting lineup plus closer and an extra player or two per team.

For me it would be about 600 cards because I like the Leaders and World Series subsets.

Default few is more

Years back Is also answer 660, or 598..because as most know with 60s70s stuff..you can pick up 200-300 cards in one shot....but since diving into 50s stuff..these 210,252,etc total cards in sets ..seems easier ( less cards) on the surface ..but you tend to get "hung up" on those pesky Mantles,J.Robbys,etc..

Default 500-ish

I think 500 is good, nice full binder but not overflowing, Some combo cards, etc. allowed but not too many useless subsets like "Boyhood photos" (72). Speaking of which the 72 set is too unwieldy 787 ouch!

Default Rookies

I'd put each team's Rookies two-up on a specific card for that team, rather than four-up on a position-specific card.

All-Stars get a star on their card, not another card in a subset.

I agree with getting rid of the "Big League Brothers"-type subsets, but would have to find room for Record Breakers. Also, need to include the Bazooka Bubble-Blowing champ!
