Yummy postcards!!

Personally, I'd kill for the '07 Joe Jax, but Jeff would probably kill for just about any PC he doesn't have!!

Here's another WaJo PC (trimmed, unfortunately) that I have never seen another example of. Has anyone (Jeff, show me yours!)? Also, can anyone tell me where/when this picture was or might have been taken?

I think that might be in Brea, California, in October, 1924. I've seen a picture of Walter and the Babe in front of some chicken wire similar to that in your PC before their exhibition at the Brea Bowl. And he did wear that sweater in 1924. He played in many exhibitions after the 1924 world series, though, and I'm sure that kind of wire was common to local ball parks at that time.

I have seen hundreds of Cobb photos, but I have never seen him looking 'happy' before...he must be standing on top of someone.

I picked up the Joe DiMaggio postcard when he was the service during WWII, in the Bagger's Auctions.

Being Italian he was my Dad's favorite player when he followed the Yankees.

Default Rekindling the postcard thread

Thought I'd resuscitate this great thread with some RPPCs from north of the border, the 1908 and 1909 Northwestern League Vancouver Beavers. Included here are team composites, along with individual cards of Northwest/west coast legend Lou Nordyke, and soon-to-be Pittsburgh Pirate Ham Hyatt with his nine bats. Love this card!

Note that the individual RPPCs are the same images used in the team cards (Hyatt, bottom left in 1908 team card, and Nordyke 2nd from right, middle row in the 1908 card, and third from left, middle row in the 1909 team card).

The 1909 Card is also noteworthy due to the presence of Dick Brookins. Many of you know of Jimmy Claxton, perhaps not of Brookins.

Here's a post from Jay Dell-Mah's excellent site which tells his story:

http://www.attheplate.com/wcbl/profi...kins_dick.html

Enjoy.

Default 1912 Smoky Joe Wood, Underwood & Underwood baseball postcard

Smoky Joe Wood earned a 34-5 record with a 1.91 era in 1912, the year Underwood & Underwood published this rare postcard. Even more remarkable is that he began 1912 with a 3-2 record, after which he went 31-3. For early baseball postcards and more, visit http://www.sportingoregon.com/ (always buying!)

Default 1920 Naval/Baseball RPPC

I picked up a nice selection of sports postcards while visiting relatives in Indiana last week. Most of the cards were from the 1940s/50s – baseball ballparks, college football stadiums and some baseball spring training scenes.

One that caught my eye for its military appeal was this 1920 RPPC of what appears to be crewmen from the USS Oklahoma. It has three things that are cool to me – the military, baseball and a dog! I actually noticed the sailors and the “Oklahoma” flag before I saw the baseball players and the dog.

I knew that the Oklahoma was sunk at Pearl Harbor in 1941, but in my research I found that she had escorted President Wilson back-and-forth to France in 1918-19, then spent most of 1920 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (maybe where this photo was taken?). She sailed around South America and joined the Pacific Fleet in 1921, 20 years before she was hit in Hawaii.

My grandfather was in the Pacific for WWII and said that baseball games and small tournaments among the troops were common, but this photo looks as if it was from an event that was maybe a little bit more “official?”

Anyway, just wanted to share one of the more interesting items I’ve picked up in recent months.

I think I want just about every postcard shown in this thread! Below is a postcard from a Trenton NJ photographer. Maybe it is a Trenton Tigers player? Even if it is just a local high school student I really like the image.

As always, great stuff seattlerainiers. Great image of "Big Chief" Dick Brookins. My apologies, not strictly baseball, but a strange 1907 leather postcard of my alma mater. Washington State Normal School of Ellensburg (WSNS), now known as Central Washington University. The banner is made of some type of heavy felt, or denim that was once dyed red, but it is seamlessly attached to the leather postcard. I have no idea how this was done.

Default Just picked these two up

Shonen Ruth and single signed Ruth postcard. I'll add my other Ruth postcard too with these two to make it a trifecta. Was going to sell the last one but talked the wife out of making me doing it with a few "boy I don't think I'll ever get another one of those again" lines. Thank god that worked. lol.

I've always thought & heard/read the "Cobb fielding" was kind of rare, but the signed "Cobb Fielding"... that's not easy to find. I like that one.

Derek,

The Bell is from the 30's but I don't know what specific year. The Yawkey is from 1959 I believe.

Trey- Thats the exact same way I felt when I first saw his pose on the card and because of that I just had to have it

Jeremy- Thank You and I agree as I have seen/owned quite a few Batting Cobb's but I rarely see the fielding one

Kenny- That Cool Papa is sick, congrats!

I have binders full of what I consider Giants postcards......but what does this thread consider as "postcards"? I don't want to embarrass myself....

Default Cooperstown Induction Weekend Pickups

I was able to get about 20 old postcards in Cooperstown during Induction weekend. Here are a few of my favorites...

--First, a pair of 1920s Polo Grounds postcards, both of very similar views and featuring manager John McGraw. The first one is older and has writing on the back, but no stamp and no postmark (guessing it was likely addressed, but never sent?). The second one has a 1925 postmark and has the white border with a different font. It is clearly a copy of the first. Tough to tell in the scan, but the picture has been artificially enhanced and McGraw's name is hard to read. Also, McGraw's pic is in a slightly different place on the card.

--Second, a few Cooperstown postcards circa 1939 - one featuring the newl-opened Hall of Fame and two featuring Doubleday Field, including the opening ceremonies on June 12, 1939.

--Lastly, as a collector of anything to do with old Comiskey Park, I had to pick up this early 1940s Comiskey card.
