Default Some T206 Trivia

T206 Trivia...Let's Have Some Fun!!!

I. Does anyone know who the oldest player depicted in the T206 set is?
(Hint: Ten players were born in the 1860s) The answer surprised me!

II. Does anyone know who the youngest player depicted in the T206 set is?
b. What is he famous/infamous for?

III. Of the nine youngest players depicted in the T206 set all except two were depicted in the 1914 Cracker Jack set, with one being added to the 1915 Cracker Jack set the following year and one who never made it to a Cracker Jack set.
How many of the nine can you name?

These answers exclude the following six:
I don't have any birthday info on them
Bastian, Jack
Miller, Molly
Phelan, Jimmy
Poland Phil
Lentz, Harry
Westlake, James

Looking forward to what you all think!

I'll take a crack at:
1 - Hugh Duffy
2 - Rube Marquard maybe?

Good guesses so far on the oldest!
Duffy I have listed as the third oldest T206 player
Cy Young is the fourth oldest on my list
(He was my choice as the oldest T206 player before doing some research!)

Not close on Marquard as there are twenty-six players younger than him on my T206 list!
Keep the guesses coming though

Default T206 trivia

I’ll have a go:
I. JH Hart is oldest
II. Chick Gandil youngest
III. Pattee not in either set

No dice...JH Hart (Montgomery) is down on the list as he was born in 1878

Getting warmer on the youngest though! Correct birth year but wrong player
Gandil is in both the '14 and '15 CJ sets and he is very famous/infamous however he is the oldest of the nine youngest players on the T206 list (ie there are eight players younger than Chick).

Added clarification to III and yes Pattee is not in either CJ set

That's my guess.

I would have said Fred Merkle for youngest, but I checked, and there have to be several minor leaguers younger than him.

Great job Brian! Great job Lobo!
Arlie Latham is the oldest T206 player being born March 15, 1860 (some five years before Bill Hart who is the second oldest).
MLB debut July 5, 1880
Last MLB appearance Sept. 30, 1909

Is Tris Speaker the youngest? If so, I could think of a few things he's famous/infamous for.

Based solely on the fact that Titus wears the only mustache in the entire set, a look that was popular with the 1800s players, I would have guessed Titus as oldest.

Great job Lobo!

Fred Merkle is the youngest T206 player being born December 20, 1888.
MLB debut Sept. 21, 1907
Last MLB appearance Sept. 26, 1926
He is famous/infamous for his base running error that cost the Giants the 1908 NL Pennant named "Merkle's Boner".
He is card #78 in the 1914 and 1915 CJ sets.

I would have said Fred Merkle for youngest, but I checked, and there have to be several minor leaguers younger than him.[/QUOTE]

Correct birth year (1888) again but the answer is Merkle.
Speaker is in both the '14 and '15 CJ sets and he is very famous/infamous being part of the second HOF Class (1937)
He is the second oldest of the nine youngest players on the T206 list right behind Gandil (ie there are seven players younger than Speaker).
He was my favorite old time baseball player growing up!

Titus was born in 1876 and yes he does have that 1800's feel with the mustache!

Love combining two of my favorite sets T206 and E145-1
Of the nine players born in 1888:
Gandil, Chick January 19
Speaker, Tris April 4
Scott, Jim April 23
Wheat, Zach May 23
Krause, Harry July 12
Sweeney, Jeff (Ed) July 19
Dubuc, Jean September 15
Hoblitzell, Dick October 26
Merkle, Fred December 20

I probably should have worded the last question better
All except Krause and Dubuc were included in the 1914 Cracker Jack set
Dubuc was included in the 1915 Cracker Jack set
Krause never made it in either set

Cool.

I knew they were reaching back to pick up popular players who hadn't been stars for a few years, but the lack of youth is surprising. Not so much because nobody knew what a rookie card was, it's just that there are ~400 players, some of whom didn't get a card until the 460 runs.
