The price on the display made me a little leary as well. A nickel should have bought a lot of candy at any time that Cobb was active. However, I believe that a tin of Colgan's sold for a nickel during the same era. |

I have seen a few of the smaller boxes (one over 20 years ago, one I believe at Lelands a couple of years ago) but I have not seen this display. That of course doesn't prove anything one way or the other (watching too much Ms. Paltrow and Mr. Hopkins on DVD this weekend. |

Peter, I think you may be in the clear as far as it being real. I found the Lelands link Max is referring to: |

was watching this as well. My main concern is the tan background being 'washed' off at the stain, but the text is unchanged... My old stained cards tend to show darker. |

I was watching this as well...the seller seems to sell legitimate items. Oftentimes when you see these old baseball display items if you check the sellers other items for sale you will see other bogus items. This one looks good...especially when you consider the box that was in the Leland's auction. I would only worry if you see another one on ebay within the next few weeks. |

Peter I was the under bidder. I have seen the wrapper once back in 98'in a Superior auction. It was called their Heavy Hitter Auction. I remeber it clearly as one of my cards , Mayo Anson gradded PSA 7 was on the cover. Wish I hadn't have sold it way back then. The wrapper also had Cobb's picture on it and they said that was a one of a kind piece. The "opening bid" for the wrapper was $3500.00. My lose and your gain because if it is real my guess is the real value is equal to the wrapper or more. |

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but these are fake. At least the 10-15 I have seen in the last 2 years, including the one I bought on ebay in July of 2005 are. It looked great to the naked eye and even after I received it in the mail I thought it was real. The work on it is so well done, especiallly the easels on the back, that it seems like it would be difficult to ever fake something like that. It was also shown to several other hobby experts as well (Including folks at Mastronet) who all came to the same conclusion, beautiful and well done counterfeit item. Like I said above as well, I have owned one (the first one I ever saw on ebay) and have seen at least another 10 like it since then. Of course there might be a real one out there, I would not take any chances on these given my past experience. To this day it is the ONLY fake item I could not spot on ebay and fell trap to. |

Scott - that is interesting. Im curious to know if Peter informed the seller that he was not going to purchase the item or whether the second chance solicitation was a further attempt to scam bidders out of money. |

Rys is correct, reproduction. There are Ty Cobb candy wrappers and boxes out there that are real. About 7 years ago 2 showed up on ebay. They come with Cobb's picture and without. |

Not real, these were faked well and surfaced in the Ohio, Michigan, Indiana areas along with the Tuxedo items and the 38 Goudey big head fake ad pieces. |
