Default RC's - Jesse Owens & Weissmuller

Posted By: steve

What is known as the rookie cards of Jesse Owens and Johnny Weissmuller? And would these cards hold the same lofty status as their baseball counterparts?

For example, people are willing to pay big premiums for Ted Williams' 1939 RC, but would people care enough to plunk down a premium for either J.Owens or Weissmuller's RC ?

Reason I ask, my just graded 1935 Muratti Jesse Owens is now in a PSA 5 holder - the only one PSA has ever graded and the earliest of all Jesse Owens cards ever to be PSA'ed. Furthermore, I have a couple Weissmuller's that would surely be earliest issues if graded.

Basically, how high could the market go for these items, or just face the fact that regardless RC or not, these cards won't ever be worth all that much.

Steve

besides being athletes both of these people were celebrities. so these cards will carry a premium. but, i do not think that they will ever be in the same class price-wise as a baseball rookie card, of the caliber you mentioned. baseball cards are widely collected as compared to other sports or non-sports. so,your last paragraph sums it up.

I used to have a 1926 W512 Weissmuller PSA 8.

Your Murati comes up as the earliest on PSA's pop report.

Weissmuller has a 1926 Spalding card. When searching for Weismuller (one less "s"), a 1924 Willards and 1926 Lambert come up.

Regards,
Kyle

I would think any premium would be for scarcity not rookie card status outside the major sports.
