SO of the 2 cobbs depicted below...a t206 Greenie and a 1916 Herpolsheimer...which would you rather have? The obvious pros to greenie are eye appeal, famous and popular set, short printed...more mass appeal. The herpo is much scarcer, black and white image on a relatively obscure set would not appeal to most?! Tough call?!?!? Which should be more valuable?

If I were trying to put a Cobb Type Set together I would go with the Herpolsheimer's simply because it may be my only chance to ever get one.

i agree dan...there can't be many of them out there...whereas the green cobby is traded regularly in all grades. i personally never loved the bat off...colors are great...but the greenie has always been my fave!

That bunt stance is typical Cobb, but I'd take the greenie as well. That's one classic card that looks better as the condition worsens.

does anyone have access to the pop reports? I'd be curious how many of each have been graded?

Good ole PSA shows only 10 Herpolsheimers graded and your Cobb's not one of them. So it must be unique, not to worry it looks to be in an older holder and I too have some graded but unaccounted for on the pop report cards.

As to the green cobb they had graded 349 in all grades, so the ratio of 349 to 1 is overwhelming and I would much rather have the Herpolsheimer even before I knew all this.

I owned the Herpy Cobb before you did, and it wasn't easy getting rid of it. I think there are a few others, but PSA does not keep accurate records. A year ago the prices were half what they are today. Great investment card. Enjoy it.

The green portrait T206 has always been one of my favorite Cobb cards, so I prefer that one. Both cards are nice though.

I agree with you Wes. I also prefer color over black and white.
No harm in the selling price. I sold it for a tad more to someone who then listed it. I actually think it should have sold for more, but I don't think everyone knew about the scarcity of the issue. He should have described it better.

Awesome card!!! I love this big borders... LMK if you ever want to sell it. Both cards are awesome poses, but there's something haunting about Cobb's green Portrait pose.

Most of us have Green Cobbs in SGC holders. SGC does not distinguish all Cobb poses in their pop report (at least not the free on-line one), so there may be at least the same number of Green Cobbs in SGC holders as there are in PSA slabs. And then if you consider how many Beckett and GAI have graded, and all the ungraded ones, does this card still qualify as "tough" or "scarce"? By comparison, how much less common are the other poses? Just curious--I don't have access to any pop reports except SGC.

The green Cobb is one of my favorite cards though.

But I must say that the M101-4 set has its charm, too. [I picked up a Wagner in the latest Hunt auction, and I think it's unique--not classic like the portraits, but perhaps a bit out of the ordinary].

i'd take the green cobb any day. not is it an earlier issue card from a major set, but i'm not a back collector so the herpo is like any other m101-5/4 variation to me. if anything i'd try to seek out a sporting news if i wanted an example of that cobb.

edited to add joe's big border green cobb is the most awesome example i've ever seen!

If the Herpolsheimer had been made just a few years earlier, say between 1910-1912, I think the issue would be EXTREMELY hot, those couple of years later into his career I feel hurt in comparison to the 'early' depiction aspect of his other cards - especially the t206's..........Ahh, what the heck, i'd take the Herpolsheimer anyway!!!

As a T206 collector, I would love to have the green Cobb in my collection. The Herpo, however, really stands out. I find that a card such as the Herpo, which displays the history of the game (uniforms, fields/stadiums, etc,) takes precedence over any other.
