Default If it's Baseball, and it's from Ohio, let's see it !

Since I've been to Ohio for three of the last six Nationals, and I always had a great time there. Let us celebrate all that is Baseball in Ohio.

For Oldtix (Rick), Rob D. and all the rest of yous guys!

Vintage original TYPE I photograph from the Baseball Magazine Archives of Nap Lajoie by the legendary lensman Paul Thompson circa 1910's.

Before we move up to the majors, here's a nod to the American Association champion Columbus Red Birds of 1933.

Default Ok, I'll play

Here are few that I picked up at this year's National.

1. 1938 Bob Feller playing marbles with the marble champ from Akron.
2. Louis Van Oeyen photo of Logan Drake. Notice the black arm band in memory of Ray Chapman.
3. 1935 All-Star Game held in Cleveland. Joe Vosmik fell runnng to 3rd on a hit by Gehringer. Pepper Matrin was covering 3rd base.

Hope you enjoy them

Jantz

Last I checked, Cincy was on the north side of the Ohio River... so I guess Reds stuff will also qualify for this thread. Below is a Turnstyle from Crosley Field, an early Redland Field Mirror (Crosley Field's original name), and a few more Reds' knick-knacks.

Better things to follow, once I have some time to dig out....

Default Indians Stuff

Jimmy... those are two pristine autos from mega Hall-of-famers... awesome!

Below is a rare unaltered 1970 Indians Home Jersey that was worn by Ted Uhlaender. This is a single-year style with the nifty 3-D Font. IMO they shouldn't have abandoned this style so quickly, as it's beautiful in person.

Big Chief Eerie Doll... tough to find w/original box! Nowadays, they might face legal battles for this kind of merchandising...

Default Reds stuff...

Tony Perez' Game-used Helmet from 1975. The Letter from Cincinnati Reds says that it's one of two he used that year, so it probably saw action in the World Series, with a 50-50 chance he was wearing it when he clobbered Bill Lee's Eephus pitch high over the Green Monster. One of my faves...

Also a nifty Redlegs game-used Jacket from the mid '50s...

Just uncovered these photos of Crosley Field, which my Dad took in 1969. A magical little Ballpark as I remember it at age 9. With the gigantic left field scoreboard and the incline terrace in the outfield (in place of a warning track) it had some really unique features. You can also see the press box, which sat high above the top deck!

These images brought back lots of memories. I traced one game to July 15, 1969, based on the scoreboard info (0-4 in the first inning, and Britton vs. Clay Carroll) I forgot Carroll was a starting pitcher back then (he later became a premier reliever in the 1970s Big Red Machine days).

There was apparently a second game against the Braves, as Johnny Bench is seen batting. Bench was hurt for the July 17 game, and was not playing (Pat Corrales played in his place, as evidenced on the scoreboard...)

Just wanted to share, as it was a real "score" to find these ektachrome slides after 40 years in storage!

BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS! Love it when we see angles like this! Thanks for sharing them!

Here's a huge Burger Beer store display featuring Crosley Field in glorious color as well! (measures 38" x 28") I don't know when the color of the grandstand was changed so I can't give a date to this.

Default 1875 Base Ball Program...Cleveland OH

Here is a program from a day of outdoor sports that took place in 1875 on Euclid Ave. in Cleveland Ohio. My image cuts off cuz I wanted to feature the great graphics, but just below the city and state are indicated as Cleveland Ohio....wonder if Brooks School or Euclid Ave. is still there?

I believe that the Reds and Tigers were the only teams to put out these Silk Banners for their championship teams (someone please correct me if that's wrong).

They are scarce, and a bidding war ensues each time one comes to auction. A 1940 Reds one (with major condition issues) recently hit ebay. Just too tattered for my liking, but I do have these three toughies. The 1961 Reds/Yankees Banner always commands a premium, as it is coveted by Yankee fans as well...

Couldn't let this thread go by without posting this one...

1919 Reds Pennant from the year they "defeated" the Black Sox in the infamous 1919 World Series. A rare and historically significant pennant.

Also a late 1930s pennant with an incredibly detailed depiction of Crosley Field...

Great stuff Mark. Those silk banners must be extremely scarce as I dont think I have seen any of the three you posted. I've seen the Tigers version several times but no Reds.
Here's a piece to go along with the 1919 Reds pennant you posted. Hopefully I will get around to getting it framed soon.

I concur with Brock. Mark's silk banners are just tremendous!

And Brock, what is that great looking piece you posted? Can you add some close-up scans for us old guys please.

Shortly after moving to Ohio, a newspaper classified ad led me to an old bar in a small town north of Columbus. The walls were covered with original baseball photos and panoramas but years of exposure had damaged most beyond repair. Alas, I sold this 1919 Reds panorama within minutes of opening my table at the Atlanta National in 1992.

Thanks Jimmy and Brock... This "Ohio Baseball" thread still hasn't received it's proper dues (I had to go all the way to page 4 just to revive it!) So I'll scrounge up more stuff hopefully before too long...

Brock - that piece is amazing, and is begging to be framed. So many options on that one... please be sure to "show and tell", after you've had a chance to frame it.

I previously posted these usher badges in the pickups thread, but after receiving them in the mail last week decided to pop them in here, too, because they're much nicer in hand than what I expected. Pretty heavy and high quality, and bigger than I imagined (although the dimensions were clearly stated in the auction catalog -- am I the only one that happens to?).

The fact the one clearly is League Park is exciting for me, because other than a folding chair and brick, I don't have any items from the actual ballpark. My guess is the other two are from League Park, too, but obviously because of the lettering that's just an educated guess.

He made popular the wearing-socks-with-flops look in the clubhouse.

Rob,

Those are sandals, not flip-flops. Don't you know anything?

D.,

Keltner often is cited for ending Joe D's 56 game hitting streak, with a couple of nice fielding plays.

Those who have or had tenure in the game call them flops. Or shower shoes. Not sandals.

Let me get this straight. Professional ball players are so rich they wear LEATHER footwear in the shower?

(And I checked. You never had tenure. You had "sixure".)

We lived just outside of Columbus from 1995 to 2005. So I have Ohio "connections". If I have to be a "fan" of the Indians or the Reds, I'm out. Not big on most Ohio teams. (Except that I'd like to see the Buckeyes recruit some team speed and be able to play with the SEC someday.)

I live in southern Michigan and worked in Ohio at two different places. Was just having a little fun. All of the Big Ten needs to recruit speed so we can get some respect in the polls. Was stationed at Ft. Bliss in the service also. D.

In the past I had always hated and rooted against Ohio State....I have no rationale for this as I don't believe Nebraska has ever played them. Now though because I am afraid they will try and steal our coach if Tressel gets fired I root for THE Ohio State University very heartily.

GO BUCKEYES!

Ohio State and Nebraska have played twice in football:

1955: OSU 28, Nebraska 20
1956: OSU 34, Nebraska 7

I'm proud to say I did not know this but had to look it up in our database. Ohio State football fans might find it interesting:

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure Nebraska didn't have a football team from 1942-1960.

(Ohio State may finish this year at 7-5. Perhaps they'll meet Nebraska in the Liberty Bowl or the Weed-eater Bowl.)

Cool piece, Andy. Though I've seen the pinback, can't say that I've ever come across one of those player charms.

Default Vernon...

Thanks Rob,

For years I didn't know much about these. I did know they had to have been issued for a short time in 1949 because of the others that I have, two of the players overlapped on their respective teams for only about six weeks that summer. Dr. M's guide shows a few that he correctly dates 1949 as well.

I've got a handful of Cubs, White Sox and this one Indian. I've also seen a Yankee although it's been a long time.

You know that the Nebraska players designed the original uniforms themselves, don't you? Do you know what the "N" on the helmets stands for?

Default Reds Post Cards

Here's a couple of post cards from the winning years! The 1919 one is the rarer National League champs version.
