Default Can You guess this Family friend

This former major leaguer was a Family friend when i was growing up, Can you imagine being a 12yr old Little league Catcher and talking to a Man that batted against Walter Johnson and was Spiked by Ty Cobb. I wish I would have known more back then, I could have asked better questions. I think he died in 69 when i was in Nam. Can you guess who this is. Hint he has a 33 Goudey card.

Hint #2
Something in the Picture should give away his position. How do I know he was spiked by Cobb because he told me so. Did NOT have a Cup of Coffee in the bigs.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly in the picture gives away his position?

Only a Catcher would have a Cap that looked like that.

Tough to see that the pic was Glenn Myatt. His 1933 Goudey card is one of the toughest, at least per those that were graded by PSA. The catcher's mitt on the Goudey card gives away his position.

Only 5 PSA 7s, 5 PSA 8s and 1 PSA 9. Here's my PSA 7:

And another card - the 1933 World Wide Gum (commonly known as Canadian Goudeys). Even rarer - 3 PSA 7s graded, only 2 higher...but much much less in demand than the American version. My WWG PSA 7 is much better than my Goudey PSA 7, but at a fraction of the price.

If you can share with us any other info you have about Glenn Myatt, I think that would be great. From a card collector's perspective, I can only tell he has a tough Goudey card, and he looks like he was a part-time major league catcher most of his career. He played a long time - 16 seasons - so I'm guessing he was very good defensively.

Glenn would roll over in his grave if he knew I had a Cobb card in my collection, He did hate him so but who didn't, still the greatest player of all time.

He lived in a Modest Home with His wife of many years by the Houston Ship channel. My stepfather and him worked together for Lykes Bros steamship Co. I remember on the Walls of his home was many photos. One that stands out in my mind was a 1926 Indians Panorama with Speaker in the Middle as the manager of course. He came up with Connie mack's A's in 1920. i think he led the Southern League or pacific Coast league in Hitting in 1920. He played for the Indians for most of his career spliting catching duties with Luke Sewell. His wife had a huge scrap book with all kinds of neat stuff in it about Ruth, Glen and the like, I wish i had that now. He hated Cobb with a passion, he loved Speaker and they had many personal Photos of Glen and Speaker on Deer and various Hunting trips together. I visited his wife in the 1980's and reminised some, she has since died. She had worked at the Astrodome for over 30 yrs and had every Astros freebie ever given out at the dome. That would be some good ebay fodder now. I was pretty Young when I knew him but being a Catcher myself and an All Star if I may brag on myself. he took a liking to me and always went out of his way to incourage me. he had some falling out with Walter johnson when Johnson managed I think the Indians for a short time and was suspended from the team for awhile. It was a great experience for me.
Hope I didn't bore you
Jerrry

great story, always love to hear story about the so-called "commons" in the sets that I collect. some of their stories are much more interesting than the stars.

You say you were an All-Star --- in the majors? or in little league?

In one of Cobb's Autobiographies he states he only had issues with one Player (Yeah Right) and it was a Cleveland Catcher. I always thought that it was Glenn he was talking about. Glenn was always so adamant about Cobb being a dirty player. he said he really did sharpen his spikes in front of everybody in the dugout as a type of Intimidation tactic. Cobb was always looking for that edge.

Am a little late with this response, but Rich, I would think the most famous Cobb spiking victim was Home Run Baker, no?
