Default 1912 Red Sox paper team photo

Hey gang - Really appreciate the wealth of knowledge here on this board!

I have this framed paper team picture of the 1912 Boston Red Sox. I picked it up about 15 years ago from a friend, who also had a 1912 New York Giants team photo (it was different than the Red Sox one, as it showed a few highlighted players in small inset pictures and maybe an action shot in addition to the team group photo) and a vintage photo of a non major leage team from about the same time frame that he had picked up as a group. My friend kept the Giants photo and sold the "real" photo, but I was able to get this from him as it has the pride of Falconer, NY - Hugh Bedient - in the back row, whose items I collect when I run across them.

Can anyone provide any information on how this was issued? Since it was with a similiarly framed NY Giants picture, I thought maybe someone had picked these up at the World Series in 1912, or maybe they were issued in that time frame to commemorate the series.

I've never taken it out of the frame - I really like the look of it as it is. Do I need to worry about it being flush against the glass? Seems to be holding up failry well.

Thanks for any info!

Thanks, Steve - have to admit that I am a little afraid to open it up, since it has probably been in this state for many years! Had a horrifying experience with glass and some pm-8 pins quite a few years ago, and it has left me a little gun-shy...

Default popular image

It's a very popular image that was made into large postcards and premium cards, such as this one...

Thanks, Leon! I like the hint of coloring on that card - very nice. I have seen this same image a few times, maybe once in a guide and once on a reprint post card, among others. There is another 1912 Sox team picture taken from an angle which also seems to pop up in different forms from time to time as well.

Hi-
I had a 1912 Giants and Red Sox team premium with advertising from a drug store (if I recall correctly) that used a similar photo to the one you are posting. Mine was pretty large, and also in very poor condition. I had never seen another (I found mine at Brimfield) and the dealer I sold it to has had no luck gathering any additional information. Very nice piece!

Thanks, Alan! Was the advertising on the back of the piece? My picture is also fairly large but I have never taken it out of the frame to look at the back.

Default should mention

I should mention too, that I have seen several postcards with this image and all were black and white. Funny thing, I don't think I remember seeing the Burk and Atwell logo on the lower right of the picture in my scan until today. Learn something new every day.....

Tinted, but severely faded.

Thanks TP

Kind of looks to me like it could be an M113 Baseball Magazine Supplement.

Thanks, Phil - I do see some similarities, but a quick scan of the m113 pics in the forum seem to be a little different - the others seem to all have printing information at the bottom, and the printing "color" seems a bit different.

No, the advertisement was on the front. Yours is a really cool piece and if you do end up taking it out, I'd like to know if there is anything on the back.

Isn't it possible that the Baseball Magazine print on the bottom is being covered up by the matting?

Hi Phil - the team photo is actually not matted but is on top of a backing piece of board. I suppose it's possible it was trimmed, but it looks to be intact.
