Sad to see that they have started demolition on Tiger Stadium. Detroit was on the verge of losing their team due to poor attendance and then a flash of Georgia lightning showed up and saved the day. I can still remember walking across those cobblestones to get to the gates and oh those steamed ballpark franks...

Seeing that photo hurts quite a bit. I loved that stadium. Although I only ever saw one game there, I used to pass by it on the highway on a daily basis back in my truck-driving days. Leave it to Detroit to demolish the only attractive piece of architecture in the metro area. Their soccer team is the Detroit Demolition. How apro-freaking-pos. It's not like the land underneath the stadium is terribly valuable! Perhaps they are tearing it down due to overwhelming demand for yet another crack house in the city's core. Just another example of lack of foresight on the part of scandal-ridden "hip-hop" mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. RIP.

(Excuse the tongue-in-cheek aspects to the above rant--the demolition of any historic building never fails to rile me up.)

Parts of the city look like downtown Baghdad. It just never recovered from the riots, such a shame.

Every time we go to Detroit to watch a Tigers game or Pistons game, we drive by Tiger Stadium. Since I've gotten into pre-war, I've really grown to appreciate the stadium and some of the greats that played there. I'll miss it.

I believe I only went to one game at Tiger Stadium. I seem to remember Ben Oglivie blasting one down the right field line that looked like it cleared the entire park.

Did some internet searches, & Oglivie did hit one on the right field roof.

Going off of what Paul said, there's an old train station near the park that is just waiting to be demolished now. Doing some research on it, it was a great place in its time; now it's just a place for homeless people to hide from the weather.

It's a shame they're tearing that down. My buddy and I hopped on a flight on a whim so we could get a game in at Tiger stadium in the final week the Tigers played there.

Here's a shot of Benjamin Franklin Guiney (1883 Wolverines) at Bennett Park - you can see workers in the background working on the bleachers.

Dan,

I love those great old pictures. They take me back to a time I never got to visit! Thanks for showing them.

Any Idea who the Tiger hitter is in the one picture??
