I hate to do this but I need to sell one of these two Cobbs soon to help pay for a card I just bought. (not for sale yet, but soon)
both are roughly the same dollar cost and is for my final collection, so it's not for the re-sale value, just personal opinion...I like both

...on Cobb's face in the green portrait, I'd keep the red. Otherwise, close call. You're unlikely to find such a nice 3 again, but a Green in that condition should be attainable again.

i just got done looking at that green cobb scratch...it is much worse looking in the scan than the actual card displays...it must be the angel...either way, it is there

if the scratch is not as bad as it looks...I'd keep the green one. you could also sell both and then re-buy one you may like better down the road. there common and prices seem to have stabilised!

I believe it is common knowledge that the green is much harder to find than the red. There have been several scarcity analyses discussed recently on this Board that have concluded as much. Of course, I agree that the Green Cobb is price higher because it is more popular -- but it is more popular because it is harder to find.

Anthony--is that a slight scuff to the right Cobb's collar (Red)? Think the Green will fetch a bit more, personally would keep that one over the Red. If the Red's a Sweet Cap or Pied. back, think (again personally) I'd definitely peddle that one...

no dave, that is a glare from the psa holder...there is a very faint surface crease on the front only, upper left corner...i just got the red a few weeks ago, then just mailed payment for a more rare card that cost 4x as much, so i am just trying to recoop some of the cost, i'm leaning toward the red...and for information purposes only, my collection is being narrowed down to about 20 cards, i now just need the '14-'15 cracker jack joe jackson...this is the only reason i will be parting with the green cobb (if thats my final answer! i mean decision)

I'd keep red. While greens may be more highly sought, I think condition remains supreme. Red suits Cobb's temperament better anyway.

There are just way too many t206's of Cobb lying around, and if you really like the image - go for a T213 red portrait or bat off if you're into sunsets. Coupons are much much tougher in total numbers surviving and I think a far better long term keeper.

I still have a tough time understanding the use of the word "rare" when it comes to cards versus anything else in the collectibles marketplace. I've always considered something "rare" to be something that is hard to find, not just "desirable". It would be something that may come available once in a blue moon, maybe with one to three known examples in existance, irregardless of the minute differences in their condition.

I just checked ebay. There's no less than 12 Red Cobbs for sale on there now and there 2 of the Green Cobbs for sale as well. I wonder how many times over the course of a year one would have the opportunity to buy one of these if one wanted to do so.

I'm not saying these cards aren't nice, but they certainly aren't "rare".

Peter...I'm going to have to disagree with you. Any of the T206's Cobbs IMO could hardly be considered rare or scarce. There were justt too many produced and I don't think anyone knowingly threw away too many Cobbs from the T206 set. Now a D355 Niagara Baking card...that's rare, maybe even bordering on scarce.

Any of the big name T206's IMO aren't rare or scarce other than the obvious Wagner and Plank and probably Magie.

Hi James,

Certainly a card that only comes up a half dozen times a year, and you need to be willing to bid-to-win to buy one.....I picked up a bat off a couple months ago that was sitting in an ebay store with bin and paid $800 ($100 less than it was listed for), after watching it sit for 6-10 weeks and hoping the seller was getting itchy.
Then again, I don't think the Coupon prices reflect the actual scarcity - maybe 40%/50 over T206 prices for the same condition and poses but easily a factor of 10 I would think in terms of examples extant. T213-1's are another deal altogether and a pricey little bugger they are!

But for me, thats the fun. Not just taking an example of a card so that I have that player in my collection, but being willing to wait and save up and then hit like a runaway train for a card I really believe in.

You certainly make an aweful lot of sense.
There certainly appear to be many cards out there that are very desirable and price will be reflected by this (although I still can't fathom why in many cases). This desirabilty factor certainly doesn't make an item "rare" though.

In another collecting venue, I'm used to "rare" being the description of an item in which case only one or two examples of the item are known to exist (not one or two examples on ebay up at one time mind you). Supply and demand will always be an issue when commanding a price, and obviously there is a huge demand in the sports card field, but even with that, many of these so called "rare" cards can be found if you want to buy one. You may just have to wait a week or two before another one shows up on ebay or in a major auction.

Of course, as mentioned in other posts, many true "rare" cards cannot be found on a regular basis, which truly makes them rare.

To sum it up....I shake my head all the time when I see some of these cards going for the prices they achieve when there seems to be a neverending stream of them on the market.

still undecided but leaning towards the red cobb, i am only keeping one of the cards based on appearance of the card and the player. not at all whether the card is rare, scare or desirable. the cards i chose to keep happen to be sought after by a lot of collector but by no means are they rare or scare...i think that everyone is just holding onto them. i have an 1895 mayo cap anson that has a major crease across it but i like the way the card (and the player) presents, like my willard chocolate's ty cobb in the favorite horizontal thread. not a high grade or very expensive card but i like the appearance of the card...thank you for everyones opinion...its make for very interesting reading...you will see the (losing) cobb for sale by summer

Dave did you just say Niagra baking is rare maybe bordering on scarce??? Try one of the most difficult frickin sets to exist! Ask Leon,it one of a handful of cards he still doesnt have for his typeset (as far as i know). and i know hes willing to shell out some major cash/trade bait for one!
Also wanted to add that I think T213 Cobbs are great. Problem is its next to impossible to find one in anything above VG condition

Only a newbie would call a Cobb rare or scarce.

The word Rare has lost its meaning.
The four letter word Rare is equal to the four letter word HYPE.

Some newbie's just have to do a little more digging.
