Default NE1 got a Charlie Peete pix?

Posted By: Bob Lemke

I'd like to do a 1956-Topps style card of St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Charlie Peete, who was killed in a plane crash on his way to winter ball in Venezuela in late 1956. He was the first, and may still be the only, major leaguer to die in a commercial airliner crash.

He was with Portsmouth in 1953, Lynchburg in 1954, Rochester and Omaha in 1955 and Omaha in 1956. I know he appears in the 1956 Omaha comb-bound "Picture-Pak" booklet, as shown in the Standard Catalog. I'd like to get a 300 dpi scan. Black-and-white is no problem, as I can do a reasonable job of colorizing.

If you can help, I'll send you a couple of cards when they're completed.

Thanks much!

I have a small, rough photo of him somewhere. You are mistaken about Peete being the only player to die in a commercial airliner crash. Here are some others who suffered the same fate:

Bill McAfee
Irv Medlinger
Nestor Chavez
Jim Hardin

There are a couple of others if memory serves corrrect--just can't think of them right now.

Bob,
I don't know if this will help but it is him.

That's a better picture than I have. Feel free to email if you want a sample of Peete's autograph for use on your card. He's a tough one!

Thanks for the quick responses.

Jeff, that picture would work great. Could I prevail on you to scan just the photo at 300 dpi?

Jodi, I do have a scan of a CP auto, but it is quite light. If you could scan yours for me, that would be great.

You can either post them here or e-mail to me at crystalsdad1979@yahoo.com.
If you'll both include your mailing addresses, I'll see that you get examples of the finished card.

Bob

Dan, That's a really great mid-1950s minor league card. It's too bad the facial details are so dark . . . though I suppose if they exposed/printed for Peete and Alston, the rest of team would look like Casper.

Is one of my favorite people in big league history. He lasted forever and a day in baseball because he threw a knuckler and was willing to pitch in Triple-A in 1969 when he was older than 40.

Regards
Rich

Jeff, thanks for sending the scan.

Ryan, thanks also for posting your picture from the picture pak. It's too bad the profile would look out of place on a 1956 Topps-style presentation. I may give it a try, though.

I'll be sure to post the results of my card-creation attempt in a couple of weeks.

Actually, Ryan's is the clearest photo of the few I've seen. Might I suggest that you reverse the image for the card? I think it would look better that way.

The problem with using a profile for the portrait portion of a 1956-style card is that all of the portraits in 1954-56 Topps are straight-on, full-face photos. A profile would look out of place. I still may give it a try, however, just to see how it looks.
