the seller had a $750 reserve, the first 2 bidders were playing, and the 3rd bidder put in a bid at 750 or higher, so it automatically jumps to the reserve price. his bid could be higher than that.

My guess is that there was a reserve of $750 and this bidder bid a ceiling bid of $750 or more. However, the listing does not say the typical "Reserve has been met" so I could be wrong.

Edited to add: It looks like Rand and I posted at almost the same time.

Now that we've cleared up the mystery, can anyone tell me why someone would bid more for this card than the SMR value for a common in PSA Mint 9? I know there are set and registry collectors, but surely this card isn't that rare, is it? The seller listed the cost of insurance as $1.35, implying he was expecting a selling price of less than $50, so i really doubt there was a reserve set at $750, especially since there is not the usual "Reserve met" statement on the listing. Sounds fishy to me.

I think I've bid more than what was reasonable, more than SMR (whatever that is) when I was after a card I really wanted. I get the card and break it out of the holder. I don't pay any attention to SMR, population reports, and the like. So the bidder might be some nut case like me...

So far, this set, like the E120's, is a genuinely cool set that seems to be rare in medium to high grades.

I'll clear it up since it's my auction and the card belongs to me. It did have what I thought was a very unreallistic reserve of $750 on it and why the auction doesn't say reserve was met I don't have a clue. I've been collecting the E121 and E120 on and off for several years and I've watched, like all of you, the incredible final prices on some of the caramel cards over the last couple of weeks. While I wasn't real happy about parting with this card and maybe some of my caramel cards, if can can essentially trade several EXMT E121 commons (to someone who is willing and capable of paying these prices) for a T205 Cobb or T205 Joss, and have some spending money for the National I'm all for it. Nothing fishy going on here. Feel free to up his bid if you like !
