Default Is the HOF the same as MLB?

Posted By: T206Monsta

If not, does Rose being banished from MLB preclude him from the HOF? Or, is this just assumed?

If I recall correctly, the HOF passed a rule change in 1990 or 1991 that barred admission to anyone on baseball's ineligible list. Perhaps if that rule was rescinded a person could be elected while still banned/declared ineligible by MLB.

I assumed that had been the rule all along. Otherwise, wouldn't Joe Jackson have been inducted long before 1990? Perhaps the rule was tightened up at the time Todd mentions.

I believe you are correct. And if Rose is seriously considered, then Jackson had better be right on his coat tails or I guarantee a poopstorm will hit Cooperstown.

... after his banishment from MLB. Then the rule was changed and he of course quit getting votes.

Rule 15 DECLARES all persons on baseballs ineligibility list will not be eligible candidates. This rule was enacted by the Baseball Hall of Fame February 4th, 1991 and they are not about to change it.

summed up: Rose was banned 13 years ago for an action, not for lying. So now he's 'fessing up - so what? If this works for Rose, than people in prison should be able to say "okay, I admit I did it" and they should then be released.

I know that this sort of does exist as "parole", but that means "rehabilitation" as well, and Rose is still hanging out in Vegas gambling and I don't think you can rehabilitate someone from being a "liar".

Disclaimer - I still think Rose should be in the HOF.

Will his current situation with the Internal Revenue Service perhaps give him enough bad press to put his possible reinstatement on the back burner for a while? Just curious....

<<CINCINNATI - Disgraced baseball star Pete Rose owes dlrs 151,690 in federal taxes from 1998, prompting the Internal Revenue Service to get a lien on his condominium in Los Angeles, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Friday.

California also filed a lien because Rose owed dlrs 2,772 in state taxes from 1997, but the money was later paid, according to the paper.

Both liens were filed with the recorder's office in Los Angeles County, where Rose owns a dlrs 1 million condominium.

Rose, who is trying to get a permanent ban for gambling lifted, served a federal prison sentence in 1990 for failing to report income. His accountant said the current problems are different.

"We're dealing with this issue," accountant David Stern told the newspaper. "It is absolutely, 100 percent not related to the stuff that happened in the late '80s and early '90s."

Stern said Rose wasn't attempting to avoid taxes, but simply couldn't pay the entire amount owed when he filed his 1998 tax return. Stern didn't return a phone message left early Friday.

Baseball's hits king accepted a permanent ban for gambling in 1989. He applied for reinstatement, and has met with commissioner Bud Selig and other baseball officials in recent months to discuss a settlement.

Baseball officials have said that for there to be an agreement, Rose must acknowledge he bet on baseball, an accusation he has publicly denied since he accepted the ban.
