Default Leon, You Punk!

Sheesh Leon, I FINALLY get released after 9 months in the hospital, and my first day back on Net54 you post a photo of my main man Lou Gehrig? Cool fricking photo, man.

And I actually own the 1936 Joe DiMaggio photo (a George Burke 1936 postcard)!

Hey Mark
So glad you are out now. I was going to come see you again very soon. WE need to go to lunch soon and catch up. BTW this thread, and the first post, was started around 6 yrs ago. It's been many years since I owned that Gehrig photo....

Oops! No idea why the 2011 post pulled up as the current one for me. But here are some not-so-great photos of the DiMaggio I have. Wish it was Gehrig, but it is a pretty incredible Yankees item regardless.

Yes, Leon, i *definitely* want to get back together soon. I will likely be living temporarily in a Rockwall location in about a week.

For everyone else, I will soon post a story about the incredible and horrible 2017 I have had. Right now, I am finally "free" of hospitals, but holy cow, the final (#26) chemo treatment seemed great (not one single issue during the treatment or 7 days after), but then it suddenly crushed me. Currently, I am in so much pain I am more than ready if God decides to bring me to heaven anytime!

Also, there were two different 1936 DiMaggio Rookie Cards, so here is the "Pastel" rookie as well...

Here's the original Conlon photo used for the 1924 Diaz Cigarettes Burleigh Grimes. The photo is dated 1920 on the back.

Here is an RPPC with the image used to create the T206 Roy Ellam card. I have only seen one other copy and that one is missing a corner.

Incredible thread. I have a few to share. Hopefully can upgrade the two wirephotos at some point. Forgive the modern cards. (Not my Feller cards.)

Fell into these two pics this week. Not my cards.

1944 Vander Meer official Navy photo used for his 1947 Exhibits.

1952 Ted Wilks shot used for 1953 Topps. Two-time World Series champ and had a near no-no. Not quite the back-to-back no-nos like the man above.

Here's another '59 Topps of which I was able to track the original pic. Blog post

IMG_0001.jpg

Corbis-BE043999.jpg

The original caption:
Quote:
Ernie Banks Sliding Safely Into HomeChicago Cubs shortstop Ernie Banks (center) slides into home scoring in the tenth inning off a pinch-hit single by Bob Will in a Chicago-Milwaukee Braves game at County Stadium. Braves centerfielder Hank Aaron fielded the ball and threw to catcher Del Crandall (right). The ball went through Crandall's legs allowing Banks to score. The Cubs defeated the Braves in 10 innings. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, September 8, 1957.

this one isn't an exact match but it comes from a photo in this swing for sure:

Ben, those are outstanding photos. If I could collect everything I would go back to collecting this niche of type 1s.

Thank you Leon. It is right up there with early Ruth/Gehrig and Conlon Type 1s for me. Over the past decade, I have been able to assemble about 40 type 1 photos used for cards of Ruth/Gehrig alone and counting. It allows me to continue to stay focused and collect the dynamic duo as rookie and conlon shots rarely surface. Here are some more.

Jeez Ben, don't you have any player photos used in cards other than "common" players?

Yikes, what a collection! Congrats.

Default Thanks

Thank you Scott! Great Cobb Jay.

Default Cobb

Thank you stlcard

Here is my newest pickup. I think Cobb is very undervalued in the photo world for some reason. This is a killer. It is a relatively early image used for his Willard card.
