Their quotes seem reasonable, but has anyone had any experiences with making a claim?

Do folks here have recommendations for insurance companies to insure collectibles? Or, do people use riders to their homeowners insurance policies?

I tried using my insurance company as a rider but they wanted me to have an appraiser come in and determine the value on each piece first. Let's see with over 300 various pieces I shudder at what that would cost me.

That's the problem. Would cost a small fortune to bring someone in.

Here's a past thread from a few years ago about a stolen cad and claim made.

I have thought about insurance more than once but in the end have decided if I ever have a theft or fire, I will just move on (and maybe end my addiction).

I can just imagine the conversation with an adjuster re: my Mays gamer....

Them: "it's a what? Oh, a bat. And it's cracked? And you say it's worth how much???"

Coverage is surprisingly inexpensive, to the point of being a no-brainer, and does provide some peace of mind.

And with a company that specializes in this type of thing, your cracked bat scenario will not come to be realized.

looks to be around 1.8% annually of inventory value

Is this really a no-brainer?

Does anyone know of an affordable dealers insurance company? I sell a lot of my items on eBay and I was told I need a dealers policy.

Wanted to provide an update. I just got a quote from the company Dapro recommended (and who provided Scott with his claim check - documented in the thread link above). There is a lot more to this than I realized - insurance covers more than just the time your items spend in your home. Doing the math, it appears to be a no-brainer, given the amount and type of inventory I have.

But I'll provide another update after I get a few questions answered by the sales rep and sign the deal.

I use a Traveler's collectible policy issued through the Tom Finkelmeir Insurance Agency out of Ohio. I have had it for approximately 10 years and the rates are fair in my opinion, and while I have never had a claim their customer service has been good when I have needed something; and they were fairly flexible in structuring my policy. I have not wanted to change to another agency/company.

The problem is that you can't use normal insurance in some areas - I can't get collectibles insured, period, where I live. No one will do it. After talking with my insurance agent about it, in detail, I understand. But I think you will see, after I post the details, that it can be a real money-saver if you are a dealer, to insure through a collectibles specialist. Probably also good for pure collectors, but they pay will pay the same and not use all the benefits.

I love my Safe Deposit Box. Makes me feel like a grown-up. If I had one in Switzerland I could feel like a grown-up spy.
