The 1933 All Star Game

I took the morning to look at the first true MLB All Star Game held in Chicago's Comiskey Park in 1933. The managers were Connie Mack and John McGraw. The game was loaded up with future Hall of Famers. National league starters included Bill Terry, Frankie Frisch, Chick Hafey and Chuck Klein ... the starting pitcher was non HOFer Bill Hallahan. Carl Hubbell was a bench pitcher. Other reserves were Gabby Hartnett, Pie Traynor and Paul Waner.

The American league was even more stacked with HOFers. Lefty Gomez was the starting pitcher. Babe Ruth, Al Simmons, Lou Gehrig, Charlie Gehringer, Joe Cronin and Rick Ferrell were all starters, Bench players included Bill Dickey, Jimmie Foxx, Tony Lazzeri and Earl Averill. Eddie Collins served as a coach. The game also had a HOF umpire Bill Klem.

How did the game go? Chick Hafey had the first hit, a bloop single to center field to lead off the second inning. Pitcher Lefty Gomez, singled home Jimmy Dykes for the AL's first run.In the bottom of the third, after a walk to Charlie Gehringer, Babe Ruth famously hit the first home run in All-Star Game history, putting the AL up 3–0. National league star Frankie Frisch smashed a 2 run homer to bring the NL to within a run. Earl Averill then singled in Joe Cronin to extend the lead to 4–2. The NL looked to have a chance in the top of the eighth. With Frisch on first with two outs, Hafey lined a shot to right field that looked like it could be a home run, but Ruth reached over the wall to catch it, denying the NL a chance to tie the game. Grove retired the side in order in the ninth to secure the American League's victory .... a 4-2 final score.
